    in reply to: stress #1185140

    @Liz1967 – Interesting studies!

    @scanders
    – I’ve had 5 flares of hypER over the last 10 years due to stress, and all of them occurred when I was right in the middle of it. (Obviously, my own stress management skills could use some improvement…) It might be helpful to label the stressor as something over which you have no control or some control. Things like meditation, deep breathing, etc. might be more helpful for the former – while adding a concrete action plan might be helpful for the latter.

    Hi Sue – Wow, interesting that you felt such a difference from giving up gluten! Some people do have Celiac disease (another member of the autoimmune family), while others don’t have full-blown Celiac, but do have a gluten sensitivity. (A small study from a couple of years ago actually indicated that gluten sensitivity IS a real phenomenon in some individuals).

    Did you use the “Subscribe” button at the bottom right-hand corner of the message thread? The forum won’t automatically send you e-mail updates for all of your threads, but you should be able to request this manually with the “Subscribe” button. If that isn’t working, definitely let me know!

    Hello and thanks for sharing your story!

    We do recommend that patients start with the ASOPRS listing if they are looking for a new doc, but it’s certainly fair to ask how many thyroid eye disease patients they see – and to get a second opinion if you have any concerns. Sorry to hear that you had a bad initial experience. Most docs are pretty strict with doing the surgeries in a specific order: decompression, strabismus (if needed), and then eyelid surgery.

    Hello and welcome – We actually only had one person show up. She was a Hashi’s patient who had a LOT on her plate at that time, but said that she might be interested in getting a local group going at some point. She was OK with me sharing her contact info, so if you want to email info@gdatf.org, I can put you in touch.

    Hello and welcome – I do have lid retraction (originally diagnosed in 2017), but not severe enough to require surgery.

    Hopefully, others who have had this surgery done will chime in with their experiences.

    Usually, doctors like to see that your eyes have stabilized (no changes for 6 months or so) before doing surgery. Some patients will see an improvement in eye issues as levels stabilize.

    Also, hopefully, you have an ophthalmologist who is very familiar with Graves’ disease and who can give you an assessment of whether you might need orbital decompression (which if you do, that surgery is done first).

    Welcome back! Maybe you could talk to your doctor about testing TSH/T3/T4 before you start a course of steroids and then after you’ve been on them for a few weeks. It would definitely be interesting to see how the results turn out!

    If it turns out there isn’t a connection, I’d hate to see you lower your dose on your own!

    @AZGravesGuy – Good to see you checking in. Interesting comments on diet. I really like the idea of being vegan, but love my dairy…and crave an occasional hamburger. And oh, the carbs! If someone could figure out how to make broccoli look, taste, and smell like bread, they would make a fortune! :D
