Best wishes and thoughts on this journey. I can say 8 weeks after my TT, I am still relearning my body, but have had great improvements in many aspects of my health.

Do keep us updated, you’re in my prayers :)

    Hi Sue,

I always appreciate your candid honesty. I hit week 5 post TT this week. I have not yet had a med change, but I have hit what you described as your “manic” stage this week. There was some irrational behaviors and A LOT of tears. I always think I am the only one, but here, I know I am not the only one.

I am looking forward to my first medication change, as I am suffering from many of my Hyper symptoms.

We are all here for you!

    Hi Sue,

Please continue those updates. Pre TT, I had slightly dark circles under my eyes. Very much like your description, my circles under my eyes got very big and deep that afternoon of my TT.

Do you or @Harpy, have any links on nutrition and Thyroid disorders.

    Thanks all!

    Sue,

I love carbs, and I do mean LOVE, but heavy bread intake has made me sluggish for the past few weeks.

Please, please post your finds or links to some light reading???

My eyes look scary and my face, slightly puffy, so I would be willing to give this a shot, if there is some more information on the topic.

    Take care!

    Hi Christina,

How have you been feeling? Your TT happened about a week before mine, so I would love to have a bit of a heads up on what I am coming up on ;).

I return to work next week, 15 days post TT and I have to jump in at full speed (gotta love accounting and being a one-woman show).

I hope you are feeling better and your incision is healing nicely. My steristrips are off and I am happy to report, my scar is smaller than I was prepped for.

    Take care!

Well… I met with my surgeon yesterday. My entire thyroid and a lymph node was removed, and my three parathyroids were left intact (excellent!). I also got the best, bad news I could get: there were cancer cells growing on the right lobe and isthmus of the thyroid…

I am not sure what it all means yet. The surgeon mentioned Stage 1, though I am pretty sure I tuned him out after the original usage of the “c” word.

His advice was to consult back with my endo at my scheduled follow up at the end of the month, that I should heal completely from the procedure and then the endo and I can discuss what is next. He also prodded me not to go back to work this week, that I could if I wanted to, but that next week was soon enough. So I listened and will go back to work next Wednesday.

Now, I am hoping you guys can offer up links for cancer topics and the such. Also, I appreciate Western medicine, but am very open to Holistic compliments to their treatments.

Thank you all for everything so far!

    Hi Kalty,

I read through you stuff, and with out knowing your lab numbers, I will say, I know how you feel. Through most of my Hyper journey, my symptoms did not perfectly line up with the hyper set. Yes, I had hair loss, shaking hands and a rapid pulse, but I was also sluggish, exhausted and unable to sleep.

I originally got a Graves’ disease diagnosis, and I just found out (post Op), that it was incorrect. Through my journey I also went from Hyper to Hypo on my labs, then back to Hyper while never escaping my Hyper symptoms.

My second opinion endo was my lifesaver. My first endo was content leaving me on anti thyroid drugs for 3-6 months at a time with out labs, something I wouldn’t suggest doing. My thyroid was also covered with nodules and got inflamed randomly. When I went in for my biopsy, they actually ended up also draining a cyst on my thyroid.

I had a TT last week (detailed in a nother thread). My levels haven’t bottomed out by any means, but I feel a sense of relief. And, fortunately for me, my entire thyroid is gone (there was cancer growing on it).

Keep on getting your labs, documenting your dose and symptoms and checking back in here.

    We’re all here to help!

    Hi MeeMee,

I was up at 5 am, I should’ve logged on:). Something that helps me sleep more? I save my house work ( no vaccuuming, but everything else) until right before bed. Generally, if I do it at a furious pace, it will wear me out and and I crash as hard as I can.

Also, in the past, I have used chewable melatonin (an herbal supplement) and a powdered magnesium compound.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi Sue,

I am afraid I still have the headaches, though they are nowhere near as strong as they were before TT.

I am seeing my surgeon today to go over the pathology report, so if that is clear, I am on my path to finding that special dose of Synthroid.

Wish me luck and I’ll report back.

    Take care!

    Hi Azgravesguy,

Did you finally get your TT?? Feel free to point me to the correct thread if I should be looking elsewhere for an update. I am one week post TT and am still figuring out the new “Normal”, though I suspect none of us on this forum consider our selves to ever feel like that.

Thank you for sharing all of your experience and hope you are well.

    Hi MeeMee,

Welcome to the forum! I will admit, that I browsed this forum for several months before I was brave enough to post and join up. A G.D. is scary, but I know that all of the rest of the numbers and treatments are equally as scary.

A couple things I recently discovered (and am still working on): you have to listen to your body. Before I finally went in for bloodwork to get my Hyperthyroid dx, I had every excuse under the sun for why I always had sore throats, was loosing my hair, was cold all the time and had extreme fatigue. As Karen mentioned, keeping a journal will be really helpful. I am sorry I never put that together with my labs… so many thanks for that gem, Karen.

Also, keep copies of everything and keep asking questions. Ask them of your GP, your specialists, of all of us on here. Between all of us, we can probably be of some help. This is an interesting journey we are all on together, so if we share, we can all benefit from the wealth of knowledge.

Finally, and on a personal note, I can relate and have experienced the mood swings that come along with the thyroid conditions. I am one week post total thyroidectomy(TT for short, total removal of the thyroid), and have been an emotional train wreck both before and after surgery. I wouldn’t let my significant other be at my surgery. He wants to classically “fix” everything and help me feel better. Silly guy, he has no idea what to do, and our relationship is quite strained at the moment.

I am sorry for your recent parting, but know you can find support here. In one way or another, at least one of us can help.

    Take care!

    Hi JCC,

Thank you for your update. I will be attempting to return to work just over a week post TT, so your information was very helpful.

Please keep the updates coming and take care!!

    Hi Sue,

Pre-op, I had dark circles under my eyes, but now, they’re deeper and darker. And yes, I know, my body hasn’t even truly had its levels “crash”. A friend asked me if I had been crying because my eyes were so puffy and sunken in. My reply? There isn’t anything I am unhappy about today, cause I am one day closer to my body finding its balance.

I’ll let you know if I come up with a make up trick that covers ;)

    Good Evening All,

I thought I would finally reflect on my TT and open it up to any questions as well. In the weeks leading up to my TT, I had insanely intense headaches. I had never had such a thing at any point before, and was very concerned. Knowing that I was headed for surgery, my GP also prodded me to have an eye exam (no, I haven’t done that yet).

Now for the fun part: My TT was done by what I later found out, was a leading surgeon who specializes in procedures and oncology cases. This was quite comforting for me. My procedure took longer than the 90 minutes they had planned. I was in recovery after 145 minutes under the knife. I suspect ( and will prod my surgeon at my follow up visit) that my thyroid had been very inflated at the time of surgery, and that is why it took so long. I also had two drains in my neck on each end of the incision. As an aside, that was one of the factors that led me the route I took: the fact that is organ/gland could get so swollen, big and make me feel almost like I was choking. Post surgery, I was fortunate to have no issues at all. Anesthesia was smooth and nausea was not a factor at all. I had requested with the anesthesiologist that I was not infused with any concentrated narcotics/opiates or the such. My preference was to go with IV tylenol or anti inflammatory type things. I ended up with IV tylenol every four hours. I was only slightly tachycardia coming out of the anesthesia, which was not surprising to me, since I had suffered from a racing pulse and odd spurts of blood pressure previously.

Part of the reason I chose this route was that I wanted to limit the amounts of inputs in to my body. I understand this route is not for everyone, but with all of the ups and downs my hyperthyroidism had caused me, I wanted to feel a normal sensation again: swallowing normally. I was admitted after surgery and kept over night. At 10 PM that evening, 12 hours after surgery, I began to feel tingling and some numbness in my hands, forearms, and feet. Thinking that it couldn’t be my calcium levels (they had tested normal post op), I took my IV pump for a walk. I told my nurse, and they started my on calcium.

My discharge instructions were the standard, watch for signs of infection and call immediately if you have any issues with swallowing and the such. I still had problems with the tingling (and subsequent numbness), which their proposed solution for was Tums tablets, 500mgx2, 2x daily, and an additional time if tingling persisted. After 2 days, the tingling was persistent, so I heeded my mothers’ advice. This was tough for me to do, but as a fellow TT patient who is dialed in to her Endo’s advice, I listened, and I am glad I did.

In lieu of the of Tums (which are calcium carbonate), I swapped in a store brand Citrate, of the same mg, which is Calcium citrate with a few other vitamins included, which I believe are there for absorption reasons. No, I am not an expert on vitamins at all, but after 3 days of using that calcium supplement, my tingling is just about gone. And yes, I should thank her endo. My fellow post op TT’ers, I hope this information can help you as well.

Otherwise, I am doing well. I still have some off from work, as I was off all last week, and am schedule to be off at least this week. I will meet with my surgeon mid week to review my case and the pathology results of my thyroid. I am both nervous and excited for this visit, as I am hoping there were no abnormal cells in all of the nodules of my thyroid.

I still have some of my hyper thyroid symptoms (hair loss, heat sensitivity, fatigue), but they are not as sever as they were before. I am on my 100 mcg Levothyroxine dose for now, until I see my endo at month’s end, for blood work and review of my medication. Yes, I am tired, but I am also less than 1 week post op, which I suspect is normal.

One thing I am wondering about for the TT group out there: do you take T3, such as Cytomel? And how did such a resolution come about.

Thank you @amosmcd, Kimberly, @Sueandherzoo and the rest of the forum for offering your thoughts, support, and comments.

    I truly appreciate you guys:)

My TT went wonderfully, but was more challenging than the surgeon anticipated.

I’ll share the full experience when I return home tomorrow… and after a nap :)

    Have a good night everyone!
