To clarify, I just started the tapazole about 6 weeks ago. My doctor doesn’t seem concerned about liver damage at all, even though I’ve expressed that concern multiple times. I’m going to request they check it on my next labs though.

If I fill out the medical release form, will they just automatically send me everything? I’ve been asking for copies of everything at every visit (and calling to get those things I can’t get when I’m there) and I feel like I’m driving the office staff crazy. I know I have a right to these records for my files, but I feel bad making them jump through hoops for me! Also, I did notice some inaccuracies in the doctors notes from my last visit (he put down symptoms that I never had!) Should I ask them to fix it?

Thanks for the congrats on quitting smoking! Today marks 100 days :) I’m more proud with each passing day!

Another possibility that I meant to say in there when I was talking about quitting smoking, is that I’ve been using nicotine replacement. That in itself can cause heart palpitations and racing heart, so I cut my level down and am currently using 6 mg nicotine (started at 24 mg. the highest level – I’m using an e-cigarette). I have noticed that the frequency of palpitations is lower now that I’ve dropped to 6 mg. I also cut out almost all caffeinated beverages (I might have one twice a week now where before I was drinking caffeinated soda all day every day). So as you can see, there was probably more to it lifestyle-wise than just my thyroid. My doctor is aware of these things, but he brushes them off. It seems he’s made up his mind.

I feel fine besides still having some heart palps/racing heart moments and anxiety, but that’s pretty typical for me. I have had anxiety for years, and I’ve been under a lot of stress lately. I did not have heart palps and racing 2 years ago when the baselines were done. It just so happens that my original endo appointment last month, I had just quit smoking 2 months prior and was under lots and lots of stress, and was pretty much having mid mental breakdown. He automatically assumed hyperthyroid, and I’ve questioned it ever since. The mental breakdown issue has resolved, but I don’t feel like it was due to the Tapazole so much. I feel fine overall.

Have you had antibody levels tested? (TSI, TRAb). **Yes, and they are normal.

Ultrasound was also the same as it was 2 years ago. I do have nodules, but they have not changed. My thyroid is enlarged and has been since I was in my early teens.

I haven’t really had any other labs besides the general workup from my family doctor, all of which were normal.

I already questioned my doctor once and I felt like he kind of took it personally and he warned me that he wouldn’t recommend going off the Tapazole, but if I did, to take beta blockers. I picked up the beta blockers, but decided to wait for my labs to come back before I made my decision. I don’t want to take the beta blockers because I’m afraid I’ll have to continue to take them to regulate my heartbeat if I begin now. I could email the doctor to question him again now that I’m armed with my lab results, but he’ll probably tell me I have to come in to the office and pay another copay to discuss it. Urgghhhh. I’ve been there twice in the last month already. I have an appointment scheduled in September currently. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to wait for then… I just hate to think I might be damaging my liver with this tapazole for nothing!

Thanks for your responses, ladies! This is all so stressful!!!

in reply to: Help With Phobia #1173060

While I don’t have a phobia to medications, I do really worry about what they will do to my body, so I can sort of relate. I think, in your situation, it would be a really good idea to seek therapy through a psychologist or counselor in order to work on the phobia and see if you can get past it (without the need for additional medication!) I’m sorry it is such a struggle for you. :(

Thank you all for your input. I talked to DH some more about it. We had decided when I started my med last month that we were going to skip it this year, but as the time comes closer, I was really wishing we could go. Anyways, after more googling, reading all of your replies, and talking it through with him, we’ve decided to stick to our original plan to skip this year. I don’t want to risk it, and I know I wouldn’t have fun at this particular event without it. Even if I did go and have a drink or 2, I’d be nervous the whole time about what it was doing to my liver and it wouldn’t even be enjoyable. Maybe I’ll be off the meds next year (wishful thinking) and will be able to go. I’m not a drinker to begin with, so why risk it just for one weekend of fun. Not worth it, after further thought!

It is the same pharmacy I have been using, but I haven’t had this particular medication filled before. I have the Tapazole, but I’m waiting for the Inderal. Do you think they would be willing to do an advance on a med that I haven’t had filled there yet? It’s CVS pharmacy. I do have the doctors notes from my appointment (provided to me from the doctor) that shows that he prescribed inderal as well as the dosage…maybe they would take that and give me a few? I might try that tomorrow and see what they say! Thanks!

Thanks so much for all of your advice. You really helped to calm me down, which is exactly what I think I needed. I really do think it’s just the thyroid stuff along with the added anxiety that comes along with it, just worrying about it so much. Hubby and I went out for dinner and on the way back, I started thinking about it too much again and was on the verge of a panic attack. I was able to talk myself down and focus on other things to get my mind off of it again and avoided it. I wish that would just go away!!

Thanks for telling me about the side effects of the Inderal and about the fact that Aleve is probably ok. I will confirm with the pharmacist when I go to pick up the beta blockers (when they finally get my script in) because I have a question about dosing anyways. I had a thought, I could always go to my family doctor tomorrow (they have walk-in hours on Sunday) and show them my doctors notes from my endo appt on Friday that state that he prescribed the Inderal. They would surely write me a script if I feel I need it right away.

Thanks again for helping to ease my mind!!

Also, if I DID do a trip to the ER just for the purpose of obtaining a beta blocker, would they keep me and run me through a slew of unnecessary testing? Or could they see that I actually just need the beta blocker and send me on my way? I have a feeling they wouldn’t take my word for it…

Hi! Thank you for the warm welcome! :)

I did call the pharmacy already (3 times actually, lol) but they have no record of it. I think the doctors office failed to forward it by the end of their business day or something. They normally send scripts once a day at the end of the day, but it seems they missed mine this time. I will have to call them first thing Monday.

My heart rate is actually normal. 82 BPM (it was hanging out around 100-115 BPM when I was diagnosed) and I’m not feeling many palps, just the twinges the last few days. I do have anxiety meds and have been taking them at bedtime (they are for use as needed) to help me sleep through the night without worry. They do make me drowsy, so I only like to take them at night. I carry them with me at all times though, so if it would get worse I would try it earlier if need be.

Question about the Inderal (have you been on it or something similar?) What sort of side effects did you have? I’m worried about drowsiness on that as well, and also worried about whether I could take Aleve while on it, as I get frequent headaches and Aleve is the only thing that works! I will ask the pharmacist, but thought I’d ask you in the meantime :)

in reply to: My Ears … #1172952

I don’t think it’s related to thyroid disease, but I also have ear problems (and have had them my entire life.) During allergy season (and currently), what you said is exactly the issue I have. My ears just get so clogged, I can’t hear, etc. I take nasonex and patanase. Nasonex is a steroid that helps to shrink the sinuses and is similar to your fluticasone, patanase is an antihistamine. I would ask the doctor to add on an antihistamine spray to help you get cleared up. Before my thyroid issues began, I was able to take Sudafed (the real stuff, not the new version), and it would help, but it has precautions about taking when you have thyroid disease so I would recommend asking your endo before trying it. Hope you get cleared out soon. I know just how frustrating it is! :(
