We have to be careful on this board when it comes to discussing brand names of products. General information responses may be OK, but if we stray into the muddy waters of promotion……. Anyway, the “T” and the “P” refer to the two types of antithyroid drugs usually prescribed in the United States. “P’s” generic name is propylthiouracil, usually shortened to PTU. The “T” stands for one of the antithyroid drugs (ATDs) based on the chemical methimazole. They have roughly the same impact, in that they both block the thyroid’s ability to take in iodine to make hormone. There are some differences in their impact, and based on your own specific medical condition, your doctor may prefer using one over the other.
