RAIU i believe means Radio active iodine uptake…….it is telling you that there are no nodules present –thats good—and what you have is a diffuse toxic thyroid…meaning both lobes are involved…normal in graves……TAKE IT SLOWLY…….and talk about your options…the radiologist says could be…and it probably is..but…i am not sure about the 64 percent uptake….ask if he thinks it is def graves or thyroiditis…..and also if you should try antithyroid drugs first before radiation..
if it were me i would try the antithyroid drugs first
to see what happens if he approves— to see what happens and if you can tolerate them
ask him about hasimotos thyrotoxicosis—a combo of both hyper and hypo symptoms….sounds like you dont need any beta blockers…….
i am not a health care professional only a patient……
Hi there! To begin with, you’re here now, and as I have found out in the last few weeks, you aren’t alone in this any more.
I was told by the Nuc Med Tech that did my uptake that “Normal” was in the range of 7 to 35%. But, I am not sure who determines what normal is.
You will be in our prayers and keep in touch.
Valerie
I’ve been reading some of the posts, although I’m really not sure whether
I have Grave’s Disease or not. Started last April at my annual physical with
a pulse of 40. Doctor seemed to think that I should be pleased with that,
but since I’m not a 20yr old athlete, I finally asked to see another doctor,
who tested me for hypothyroidism (which my mother and older sister have).
That made sense, since I’m tired all the time, but then my test results came
back hyper instead of hypo… elevated T4 (2.79 at last count) and low TSH
(as low as .01 in July). After retesting for a few months, they finally did a thyroid scan and referred
me to an endocrinologist, who I’ll be seeing Tuesday. The following is the
summary on the radiology report:“An elevated RAIU is noted at 64.4%. The uptake is homogeneous bilaterally.
Both lobes appear mildly enlarged. The elevated RAIU could be consistent
with Grave’s disease or diffuse toxic goiter”I haven’t been able to fine out what an RAIU is, or what is normal.
What should I ask my endocrinologist?I’m hoping that this has been caught relatively early… can anyone give me
the benefit of their experience as I embark on this process… I’m nervousThanks!
