Some of us are quite “up” on the meds. Some of us did not have a great experience with them. And whatever happened to me, might or might not happen with you. We all respond differently to the various treatments. Also, one person’s reasons for taking them or not, may not fit with your own priorities. I think the very best thing you can do for yourself is to take the time (if you haven’t already) to research both types of ATDs (methimazole and PTU), and also replacement hormone therapy (which you would need should you opt for RAI or surgery) in any good drug reference manual, looking at side effects, precautions you should take, etc., and then have a serious talk with your doctor about any questions you may have. There are purely medical considerations pro or con the meds that your doctor can point out to you, which you need to evaluate, and you need to feel comfortable with what you decide.
Good luck,
Bobbi

I’m not sure if I’m a good source of advice, but I AM in the same boat. I opted for the medication (PTU, plus I’m taking propranalol to lower the heart rate). I’m very discouraged now because I’ve been on the PTU for over two months. My doctor says my thyroid hormone is testing “normal” but I still feel horrible! Most of the symptoms are still with me, and after 4 months of averaging 3-4 hours of sleep per night, I am done in. I know that the radiation would have taken awhile to work, too, but I’m not sure medication was the best choice. Has anyone else been there? How long did it take after your thyroid hormone was normal before you actually felt better? Do you think medication was a wise choice?
Thanks! Catherine -
