Spinach, pears, and chloronated water are some of the other things to avoid. As far as drugs, over the counter type, ask your pharmacist. He/she can be very helpful in this area. Can anyone add other foods to this list?

          Katie,
The foods I can remember are spinach, pears, and chlorinated water.
As far as over the counter meds, please ask your pharmacist for his/
her help in this area. We have found ours to be very helpful. Hope
this helps you. Can anyone add to this?

Regarding what not to eat while taking medications. I’m not clear about which “medications” you’re talking about…
              Anti-thyroid or synthroid?

              Thanks, Dianne

                spinach pears and carbonated water?

Why ? Is that when you are on Synthroid or when you are on T or PTU?

I asked my doctor about foods to avoid when on antithyroid drugs he said
                he didn’t know of any.

Is there a website that can tell me more about food and thyroid?

The way I understand it is that certain foods lessen the absorbation of synthoid. I know there is a list of foods to avoid when on synthoid. Am I correct in this? Any one else know?

Why do we need to avoid these foods. Does it make the hormone
less effective? Or effect the thyroid?

All right now I’m getting a little bit aggravated. People are confusing what you can take with your medicine vs. what you shouldn’t eat if you have Graves disease. My endo told me to avoid supplements loaded with Iodine and to avoid kelp. This has nothing to do with medication. Your body will react adversely to iodine in large amounts. However, I have not been able to find ANY information on foods to avoid if you have graves ANYWHERE. If someone has this info. please post it !!! In my own PERSONAL experience I have found I do much better if I avoid the following things:

                          -all forms of alcoholic beverages
                          -cheese
                          -whole wheat products and oatmeal
-protien drinks made with milk by products(whey).
                          -fried foods(give me heart palps)

If I avoid all these things I feel much better but I have no proof that you shouldn’t eat them. I suspect that this would be different from individual to individual.
The bottom line is that if anyone has any medical information aboutn what you shouldn’t eat then please post it. It would be very interesting to see.

Wow, I find this scary since I have 2 people right now shoving a nutritional healing book at me and I don’t have it in front of me, but I do know pears and vitamin B were mentioned as things you should eat alot of. Conflicting advice!!
