      Sue,

The synthetic thyroid hormones have no serious side effects PROVIDED that you are not allergic to the dyes or fillers used in them. As I said, the chemical ingredient in them is the same chemical produced by the thyroid as T4. The fillers and dyes are different from one brand to another, though, and you should tell your doctor if you have any allergies to food dyes.

Because I am somewhat confused about a comment you made, I will add that you should not confuse the synthetic thyroid hormones (like Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc.) with PTU and Tapazole. PTU and Tapazole regulate the thyroid. The synthetic thyroid hormone pills provide your body with thyroid hormone that it is not making itself. There are different side effects and precautions to take with PTU and Tapazole. I’ve been talking about the synthetic hormones.

You stated it wonderfully. I think that this is just what the md is thinking.
I will talk to him this week. Thanks for your time. Jen
