I too have suddenly developed a fat pillow under my left eye. It makes me even more depressed than usual to think that I will have to have surgery to remove it – is there anyone out there who has also experienced this condition, but had a non-surgical treatment that worked? Thank.

Those bags around the eyes, or “fat pillows” (good name), usually do need to be surgically removed. Unfortunately, insurance companies consider this part of the surgery “cosmetic” and do not usually pay for it. It was worth it to me, however–I feel so much better with them smoothed out. It seems unfair to me to those who have trouble affording it, though.

Good for YOU! As any of us former smokers know only too well, quitting is not an easy thing to do…. more difficult for some than others, but so worth it. If the heart, cancer and other risks were not enough, then now that GD is part of the medical picture, this is sure a motivating force to keep me off.

Keep up the good work, and you will find other things besides your eyes improving. If you had a cough at all, that will get markedly better. You will be able to smell and taste things better as well. I think the statistics are that in seven years your lungs will be all pink and healthy again. Isn’t that great?

Well, I just wanted to tell you that I am proud of you — and you must be too. Good luck.

Does anyone has any words of advice from real experience how to get the fat pillow because of TED under one eye corrected? What is the treatment like? how much pain/time it takes? When one can return to work? what are the conditions under which this situations should be corrected etc? Thanks-Sam

Hi I had Blepheroplasty (sp) about six years ago before I was even aware that I had a thyroid problem. I had both lids done. Primarily the bottom lids had fat bags that made me look as if I had not slept in years. My top lids sagged to the point I could not put eye shadow on. The surgery cost about $3,600. I would say that it was not painful but I looked absolutely hideous for about three or four weeks and the entire bruising left in about six weeks or so. Was this part of the thyroid condition at that time that I had no knowledge of or was it entirely from something else such as normal aging? I was 43 at that time.

Are the fat pillows bothering your eyesight at this point?
Mine didn’t seem to bother my eyes then at all.

    Best regards,

    Hope
