Hi,
My doctor just put me on Tapazole, an antithyroid medication. He told me I would probably gain weight. I’m the one with the crappy Endo so I took it with a grain of salt. I am a strict vegetarian and excersise daily. What do you guys think?

I am eating whatever whenever almost. I am not a big meat eater so I do eat
alot of vegetables. If your Dr. said you were hyper I wouldn’t think you
would gain anyway. My metabolism has slowed down to compared to
younger people-say under 35. I wouldn’t worry about anyway,yet.Wait and see.
you can deal with it if it does happen.AnonymousApril 1, 1997 at 7:55 pmPost count: 93172I have been on and off Tapazole for 1 year. I am extremely careful about what I eat, very low fat diet, and I walk approx. 3 miles per day. The only times I have put on weight while on Tapazole is when I start going into “remission” and my thyroid becomes underactive. I am now on Tapazole 5mg. three times per week and am maintaining my weight. Gale

I’ve been collecting information about Tapazole lately. Here is an excerpt from an email that I received from Cindy that you might find helpful. It’s not good that you are taking it “on and off”:
The UCSF guy, Dr. Hammer,
told me that you have to be on PTU SOLID for at least 18 months to 2
years before you can stop taking them. Otherwise you give your body no
chance to go into remission. Someone I met on the b-board tells me that
in Japan and Germany, their remission rates are much higher because they
treat with PTU for longer periods of time, sometimes supplementing with
synthroid if you become “hypo”.Lisa

I am currently on Tapazole 3 times per week as my endo feels that I am very sensitive to medications. This is the second time that he has stated that I am in remission. I will keep the info you provided me in mind next time I talk to my endo. Have you gone into remission ever?
