You gave me my laugh for the day…I’m with you…It would be easier for me to just accept the weight than to live on rabbit food. That is what I’ve heard also – that your metabolism is pretty much non-existant. Thanks for your post, it was great.
AnonymousAugust 5, 1997 at 6:46 pmPost count: 93172This is so strange to me. The only time I gained weight was after
rai and I gained very little. I have a problem putting weight on
even when I’m hypo. Right now the doctors say I’m underweight.
I can put a pig to shame in the eating department, it doesn’t make
sense to me at all. I am more into muscle toning rather then exercising
to lose weight. Or just light arobics for my cardivascalor(sp)?
system. I think this is another aspect of GD that makes it so
unique. So many variations!Love to all,

They are nutritionists specializing in natural healing and other aspects of holistic health. They include quite a treatise on thyroid problems in their book. In a nutshell, they say if you’ve lost your thyroid through surgery or via RAI, the only way you will be able to ever lose weight is by eating a diet consisting of only raw fruit and vegetables. They claim this is because we no longer have a functional metabolism and thyroid replacement therapy is a pitifully inadequate substitute for effecting weight loss. I threw this book the entire length of my house in one enraged motion. My son now wants me to try out for his football team!
Seriously, tis’ a mystery why some of us can’t lose it no matter how hard we try while some of us (like Bobbi’s mom), are struggling to gain ounces.
It seems that every Tom, Dick and Harry diet guru out there has an opinion. All I know is there is NO WAY I’m going to live on raw fruit and vegetables for the rest of my life. I’d probably lose 50 pounds but it would only be because my colon fell out! Think I’ll go stick my head in the oven now!Luci

Seriously, a friend of mine is a second generation “holistic medicine” investigator (I say investigator rather than believer because she has learned a healthy skepticism over the years of all of these “miracle” cures). While there may be a modicum of truth in all of these strategies, none have turned out to be “the one.”
It reminds me of one of my favorite movie lines: “If someone tries to sell you a diamond ring for ten cents, chances are you’ll have a diamond ring that’s not worth a dime.”
Take care,
