From what i have read the graves eye disease is more severe in smokers than non-smokers. But I know people who do not smoke and have never touched a cigarette in their life and they have had severe graves eye disease requiring many surgeries. So which way does the pendulum swing? There was a good article recently 1/8/98 in the NEJM on this posted by someone on ther BB last week check the posting the address is listed about a week ago. I think Dee posted it.

I’ve just been told that I have the eye disease. Double-vision to the right, occassional blurry vision, periods of dry eyes, and other times excessive tears.
My doctor just called me back and told me that I need to quit smoking because the risk factor for going blind double with a smoker. But I can’t find any reports to support this.
I know smoking is not good, and I have finally decided that I do want to quit (after 10 years). But is this doctor just trying to scare me excessively.

    Thanks,
    Tracy
