Before she was diagnosed last year she spent 3 days in the psych ward of a local hospital. She had lost complete control of her thoughts but she wasn’t so far gone to understand that she was losing it. Panic attacks, self destructive behaviour and the end of a 4 year stressful relationship was more than she could cope with. A short while later, she found she was not coping again and began seeing a councellor but not a medically qualified one. She knew enough about psycology herself to realise that she was acting very manic/depressively and the “councellor” was heaping guilt into the equation. She quit the councelling but felt worse. After two pregnancy tests and still no sign of her regular monthly friend for 3 months she decided she should see her MD and perhaps get herself checked back into the ward because this “stress” was getting really bad. She got tired of people asking her why she shook so badly and was blaming all the physical symptoms on stress. After getting the results from her Doctor and getting a written and diagramed explaination (because he knew she might forget what he said because of the effect the disease has on the brain!) from an on-call, very patient, wonderful, doctor who had worked in a thyroid clinic, she and her new partner (who was suffering with her through this time), cried for hours, partly from relief and partly from fear of the unknown. It explained so much of what she had gone through in the past. Now, her mother says she got back the daughter she once knew and her new partner says he got the girl he always knew was there but couldn’t get to. Knowing what you’re up against is 99% of the battle won.
Don’t give up on your battles. If you feel fear, pray for courage. If you feel weak, pray for strength. If you feel frustrated pray for serenity. If you feel overwhelmed, pray for wisdom. We all have these powers in us. They are not super-human powers.
Remember: “The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everthing as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everthing either as a blessing or a curse.” We know what our challenges are, Warriors, and that’s 99% of the battle won.Anonymous
