I had my thyroid removed 5 years ago after taking RAI and ATD’s. My first course of treatment was ATD’s and I didn’t respond. Actually, think I was “allergic” to the drugs. I was allergic to everything so it seemed at the time. I was very ill, practically housebound. Some days my goal was to just get dressed. After not responding to the ATD, I took RAI and went hypo, began taking T4. My feeling of extreme illness, actually a sense of toxicity did not diminish. Had a gut feeling that my thyroid and the synthroid were making me ill. Decided to see another endo, I heard of via the thyroid disease “grapevine”. After a lengthy consultation and extensive bloodwork (which proved my antibodies were “off-the-chart), I decided to take the third suggested treatment route of surgery. The entire gland was removed and I have experienced a gradual and definite return to health. I have taken T3 as the main replacement, since I have reacted to every T4 I have tried. We are attempting to wean me onto T4 now so I don’t experience the roller-coaster effect of onlyT3. I am able to take a low dosage of T4 with the main replacement I take being T3. The extreme sensitivity to T4 has made this an endo’s and my nightmare!! By reviewing my history writing this message has again made me realize how far I have come and reminds to be grateful for where I am right now. Thank you for giving me the opportunity and I hope this has been helpful. e-mail me if you have additonal questions.

Elaine and I would like to hear from anyone who has had their thyroid removed to treat Graves Disease. I have had three RAI’s and am still hyper. Surgery scares me. Should I be scared?

          Hi!
I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago. It is nothing to be scared about. Mine was done by radioactive iodine thearapy. It consist of swallowing a special pill that has been treated to kill the thyroid gland. The thyroid absorbs iodine from the body, so the radioactive material does not go anywhere else. It leaves no scars and is painless.
I would be glad to e-mail or chat if there is anthing you need.
