InactiveApril 5, 1997 at 1:58 amPost count: 93172I was diagnosed with GD approx. one yr. ago. My endo said that a small percentage of people go into remission within their first year of diagnosis. It’s my understanding that he feels I am in remission based on blood work, TH levels, and my reactions to being on Tapazole. I started on 20 mg. of Tapazole per day. As I started to level off and have less GD symptoms, my meds were reduced to 10 mg. per day. After about 4 months at that dosage, I started having symptoms of underactive thyroid, I was cold all the time, putting on alot of weight, having muscle spasms etc. At that point my levels also showed that the Tapazole was having the opposite affect on me , so I was deemed in remission and taken off meds completely. Within a couple of months I was crazy–my hair was falling out, I lost alot of weight, panic attacks, mood swings, tremors etc. My blood work then showed I was hyper again, so back on the Tapazole, 5mg. per day. My endo felt that my body is hypersensitive to meds and that he needs to monitor me more closely, and wean me off meds. Within 4 mos. my endo said I was in remission again, and I am now on Tapazole 3 times per week, Mon, Wed, and Fri. I go back in 4 months for follow-up. I don’t mean to sound naive, but this is the only endo I have ever been to and didn’t question whether there really is remission or not. Glad I found this BB for so much input, opinions and support. Thanks for describing your dosage changes on Tapezole. My Endo believes
I am hypersensitve to the meds, too, and will have to be weaned off
slowly. I still haven’t been able to get all the way off the
betablockers and take one 10mg at bedtime. He told me to take about
2 weeks getting off that, but to use more if I need to during PMS!Glynis

My T4 was steady as a rock during that time. Unfortunately for me, the TSH didn’t move so I suddenly became hyper once more. The only good thing was that they knew it was fast this time (two weeks). Last time one doctor tried to tell me I must have had it for years. New doctor says that isn’t true, that it can happen very quickly. Was this remission? Maybe. Whatever it was, it felt good.
