Dear Angie:
With Graves’ I do not recommend dosing ourselves with anything other than something prescribed or agreed to by a qualified doctor. You need to talk with your doctor.
About that “edgy” feeling, and the moods. It is all related to having too much thyroid hormone in your body right now. And I’m sorry to say it will get a little worse before it gets better. I hope your doctor warned you to expect to be even more hyper in a few days. About a week after RAI, the thyroid cells that are dying off due to the iodine will start to release their stores of thyroid hormone. It only lasts a short while (in my case, it only seemed like about two or three days), but it helps if you are expecting it. And since your doctor prescribed the beta blockers, you should take them if you can, in the dose prescribed. They WILL help. Don’t take them on an empty stomach, if you have been feeling nauseated. Maybe that will help. If it does not, talk to your doctor.
And try to get someone to help you with your kids. Even if you have to hire a babysitter. You are SICK. We moms do not usually give into sickness, and our families are neither used to, nor comfortable with the idea that we need help. But right now, you do need to have help. Please ask for it, hire it, do whatever you can to get it. You need to take good care of YOU right now. Once you get through the next week or two, things should start improving, little by little.
Wishing you luck, and I hope you are feeling much better soon. Feel free to email me if you want some moral support. But please put “Graves'” in the title of your mail so that I’ll be sure to read it.
