PTU has a shorter duration than methimazole. So, if your doctor puts you on PTU, you will be taking pills every eight hours (and it is recommended that you try to keep that time span relatively constant). Methimazole you take once a day, so it would be more convenient, if nothing else. I’d recommend getting a drug reference and reading up on them. They basically do the same thing, but may have different side effects, etc. Apparently, the reason that RAI is recommended when you are older when you get Graves, is that if you go out of remission and become hyper again after a few years, you are older, and it is harder on you. The way my endo put it was “Do you want to be 60 or 70 years old and experience this again?” (Since I felt about 110 at the time she asked this question, it was a horrifying thought!)

This probably wouldn’t apply to you, but anyone who is pregnant or plans on getting pregnant should not be on methimazole/tapazole, because in human studies it has shown to burn off the fetus’ skin, so the baby can be born without skin or with patches of skin missing. If you are pregnant/trying, be on PTU!
