Lisa:
I had the same problem and thought to blame my anti thyroid medication but my Endo denied it was the cause. He was right. As women, our hormones take a real rollercoaster ride with this disease so you could more properly blame them. After trying for ages to sort the problem out myself, my doctor put me on a specially “designed” birth control pill to help regulate my homones and clear up my skin. I never had bad pimples before, not even during my teens but just after I was diagnosed my face, neck and back were in constant eruption. After taking the birth control pill for about a month and continuing to look after my skin it was as good as gold. (The odd swim in the ocean helps alot too if you’re able.) We can’t name brands here so I’ll e-mail you with the rest of the details.

reaction from the stress of the disease…not the meds. What
worked for me was washing with Noxema and using witch hazel for
an astringent….and laying off wearing a base makeup for a month or two.
What works really well is to mix a little witch hazel, rosewater and
baking soda into a paste and put it on the worst spots overnight (it
dries in white patches and you look very stupid, but hey, it DOES work). After I chilled out and the stress wasn’t bad, when my heart rate mellowed
and the anxiety ceased… the zits went away.AnonymousMarch 23, 1997 at 12:34 amPost count: 93172I’ve tried both medications and they do the same thing. I don’t think it’s a rash really because it doesn’t itch. It’s really as if there is something in the medication that makes my face breakout. My doctor was very surprised by it from the first medication and didn’t seem to have any advice. My only other option is to do the radioactive iodine and we’re trying to avoid that. There must be something I can do!

I’ve experienced a similar problem with pimple breakout and what looks
like raised under the skin bumps. I’ve had this happen twice. Each
time it cleared in less than a week when I changed my diet. I eliminated
breads, cereals, cookies, etc. (anything containing wheat gluten). For
cereal I eat rice chex or rice crispies. It could be a psychosomatic
thing, i.e., I believe by eating this way I’m improving my skin and so
it improves? This is what is known and a gluten free diet. It’s necessary
for people with celiac disease. I’ve not been diagnosed with this, but
the diet doesn’t look dangerous. Avoiding wheat gluten means I eat a lot
more fruit, veggies, and regular meals. I’ve been known to have a lousy
diet–pizza, cookies, pizza, cookies, etc.Hope the skin clears soon.

A Home Reference,” page 38: …antithyroid drugs cause allergic
reaction in about five percent of patients who take them. The most
common reaction is a skin rash that is usually red and itchy but, in
its extreme form, it may have the appearance of generalized hives.”Dry skin is also a symptom of hypothyroidism. Maybe you need a dosage
adjustment of your meds. My best advice would be to consult with your
doctor, if you haven’t already.Sorry that I can’t be of more help.
Wishing you health and happiness, Debby
