Thanks for the advice Joanne. I have an appointment on 12th Aug. At the moment my Ophthalmologist is in Australia lecturing on this very disease.

This morning when I was having my usual two hour rest on the chesterfield before I can start facing another sunny day I was feeling sorry for myself thinking it’s not fair to have to go through this day after day.

I’m trying to figure out how to explain this pain to my Ophthal in words – I feel it’s like when you get water in your ear from swimming or washing your hair. There is a sort of fuzzy, not connecting feeling. In the morning I wake up with my teeth clenched and this weird feeling mainly in my left eye. (I had right mullerectomy of upper lid in Jan ’89 so my right eye is not so bad). This weird flickering feeling seems to press on the top of my eyeball causing a sharp pain and then a tear to drip from the outer side of my eye. This sensation repeats itself and my eye is continually sore from wiping the tears.

My Ophthalmologist is connected or rather head of the eye clinic working on this disease at our university here. I thought if I could get my pain in writing for him it might help for him to explain exactly what is happening to me and also tell me if this is a “normal” symptom of this disease. (then I can share his answer with all of you)

I find it very hard to explain though. Has anyone else gone through this with maybe a better description? Thanks. SAS

Sounds like you described the pain in your left eye real good. That is how my left eye feels. It is interesting because I don’t have the pain all the time and I think my eye has spells of going in and out. Now if I can only figure out what the connection is. I smoke the same amount of cigs a day so I don’t see a connection there. Last night I fell asleep, face down and I did not put in any eye drops in before I fell asleep. I slept for at least 9 hours and when I woke up my eye did not hurt or have any yuk in it. I still got the watery eyes though. Bye Michele

I am looking for ANY information concerning Graves Eye Disease – treatments
surgery, personal stories, helpful hints, etc.

I was diagnosed with Graves 4 years ago. The tipoff was that one of eyes
was bulging. That’s the bad part – it is only one. So, for cosmetic
reasons I really want to get it fixed. I have nothing wrong with my
bulging eye medically, except that it bulges!! I had RAI last summer, no
          changes with the eye.

          Thanks for help!

Hi Kate, Your one eye bulging sounds like what I had about ten years ago. I suffered from Graves and went on Tapazole and Propranolol for two years until my blood tests showed my levels back in the normal range. During this time my right eye bulged. After my levels were normal for some while, in January of ’89 I had a right mullerectomy of the upper lid. The Ophthalmologist lowered the eyelid and after a few weeks my eye looked quite normal again. I had about eight years remission and then my Graves came back again. This time I had RAI and about a year later my left eye developed into full Graves Eye Disease with the swelling, tearng, double vision and all.

If you haven’t seen an Ophthalmologist that is familiar with Graves Eye Disease you should try to find one. You may just have to have your eyelid done and everything will be fine.

E-mail me if you need more info. Take care. SAS
