Karen, about 90% of the Graves’ disease people are easily treated and managed by the procedures. Many of the ones you read here are us other 10%

After the first dose of RAI, I was very sick, I called my endo 3 days later and told her. She said it was a coincidence and it was probably the flu. I visited my family doctor 3 times and also an after-hours clinic. No one would listen to me that I believed it was the RAI. Well it turns out I had Thyroid Storm and I am very lucky to be alive. After the 2nd high dose of RAI, they told me they didn’t think I would be sick again. Well, guess what, I was. Seven months later and they would like to give me a 3rd dose. Anyways, I guess I just don’t tolerate the RAI and I may opt for surgey in a couple of months. When I first read the literature on Graves I thought great – it’s easily managed and I’ll be back to normal. Well I’m still trying to control it and it’s been 2 years now and still have extremely high levels of Free T4.

There is very little ever written regarding adverse effects of PTU, Synthroid, RAI ect. I would appreciate hearing any comments regarding bad side effects of medications, decrease in quality of life, and especially desires for alternative therapies for Graves’.
If I am mistaken, and the treatments currently used for Graves’ really control the disease and are well tolerated, please let me know.AnonymousJanuary 24, 1997 at 1:46 amPost count: 93172I am on PTU and the only thing major side affect I have had is a very adverse taste. No matter what I take it with, when I take it, food, etc, it still tastes like I have been chewing on asprin and it remains that taste for at least an hour. And then if later on I drink anyhting out of the same glass I took my PTU with, I taste my PTU again…
