      Michele,
I have right now that film you are describing(The famous contact look). I have not had radiation but two three wall orbital decompression surgeries instead. I put a post on earlier today. My eye doctor’s call it chemosis and they indicate that it is from the thyroid eye disease. The only thing I was told is to use eye drops I have used a prescription
antibiotic for seven days and follow up with OTC eye products. I had this before and it comes and it goes. Here today, gone tommorrow. I am curious to see what the doctors told you to use and how long have you had this? Please feel free to e-mail me.

My radiologist repeatedly asks me to call if there is any problem no matter how small I think it is. He says he has a problem with patients who don’t tell him anyting. There is a VERY SMALL minority of people who can get cataracts after radiation to the eyes.He said that that was no longer a problem in that cataract removal is so easy these days, and not to let that sway my decision to get radiation. It’s been a little over a month since I had the treatments and so far everything is ok. Please keep your doctor informed of every thing you are experiencing with your eyes, even if you feel like you are being a pest. DO IT!! OK? Best of luck…..Gwen

My question is about radiation treatment. I thought the reason for this treatment was to stop the disease before it get’s worse.
I spoke with my endo today and was asking him about the radiation and he tell’s me it’s for ppl that can’t move their eye/eyes because of swollen muscles
and he also like my optho told me I have to let this thing run it’s course.. anywhere from 1 and a half to 3 years.. NO WAY I’m sick of looking weird. My
eye protrudes, eye lid and eye brow area swollen, major bag under the eye and sometimes blurred vison. Now I would think the the radiation would be something
for me. Could someone explain this treatment to me? I see my Optho every month.. and my next appt. is next week. thank you.

Hi Lori, I had every symptom you are talking about plus my blurred vision turned to double vision. After many tests a month apart they first tried methylprednisolone therapy. This was three intravenous pulses of 1 g of methylprednisolone administered on alternate days over a week to settle the thyroid orbitopathy and speed recovery. This did not work on me. It does on some people. It was then they did a CT Scan and found apical crowding bilaterally. The Doctor was worried about optic nerve compromise on the left side as my vision had deteriorated. It was then that radiotherapy (radiation treatments) were advised and ultimately the doctors feel I will benefit from an orbital decompression and strabismus surgery. Maybe you can suggest that your Doctor order a CT Scan to see exactly what is happening.

The radiation has not helped the protruding eye for me. Or the double vision. The swelling has gone down a bit. After radiation it is advised to wait six months to ensure stabilization before starting on any further surgeries. No matter what way you go it is a long and frustrating process but a CT Scan will tell whether it is dangerous to leave the disease to run it’s own course.

              Good luck, SAS
