I have a friend that was just diagnosed with Graves’ disease.
She has been trying to get pregnant for the past year,
and has been unable to conceive. Does Graves’ disease have
        anything to do with pregnancy?

I was diagnosed with Graves disease prior to conceiving. Until your friend’s hormone levels return to normal, she will have (according to my doctors) trouble conceiving and if she would be able to conceive, the threat of a miscarriage will be increased (until the levels are normal). the good news is that I was diagnosed with a hearty case of Graves in May, started PTU in May, and was discovered I was pregnant in July. If she undergoes the radioactive iodine therapy, she’ll need to wait to conceive for almost a year to insure the radioactive elements are out of her system.

          Good Luck!
          Jennifer (another one!)
