I have been given a tentative diagnosis of Graves Disease (I had dye for tests that could alter results, but b/c of goiter, they are pretty certain). My main symptoms are wt. loss, irritability, insomnia, and change in BMs. I am on BB now and have to decide about treatment. I am unsure. I have heard that RAI makes you lethargic and nauseous and I can’t take any more time off from work. But the meds can cause probs too. Which would you choose and why? Thanks. Thanks, everyone, for answering my questions. I still keep reading different books and one author seems opposed to RAI, except as a last resort when nothing else worked. But my doc says medication is a band-aid.

So, one last question. My husband wanted to go with me. Would that be appropriate or should we not be in the car together?
I’m still trying to figure out how to tell my kids Mommy is off limits.
        This should be interesting!

Hang in there, Lisa. I wish you the best. Mine is scheduled for 11/5.
Let’s stay in touch and help each other through!

I think that it is a wonderful idea for your husband to go with you. You are not spewing out radiation in massive quantities, and do not have to treat yourself like a pariah. The amount of radiation the we patients are exposed to is huge compared with what we might leak to those around us, and it has not been shown to hurt US long term. It is just prudent to try to be as careful as we can be to avoid exposing someone else to unnecessary radiation. But other than that, having him with you will be an extra set of caring ears to hear the instructions, and help you to remember whatever precautions you are given. And it’s just great moral support. My best friend went along with me — it was a huge support.
