Is it necessary to have a scan done before the RAI?? My daughter’s endo never did a scan on her thyroid and he wants to do RAI. But first we have to go for another CAT scan on her eyes so we can compare the one from 4 months ago to see if there has been any change. But I’m curious to know if there is usually a scan on the thyroid done first. She’s been on PTU for about 8 months and is gaining weight like crazy. I feel like we buy clothes every week. She has like 5 different sizes of brand new jeans in her closet. This on top of dealing with her first year of high school in a new town has been really difficult for her. I’m curious to know how anyone has done with surgery. Thanks again, this BB is really helpful.

        Hi Karen r,
I had a thyroidectomy in Aug. of 99. I was properly schooled as to what I should expect and they were right on the money. If you would like to chat in detail email me at pestep01@msn.com. I will be happy to help in any way I can.
        Take Care.

I am a forty-one year old male who was diagnosed with Graves in Jan.
2000. Was feeling very fatigued and had dropped about 15-20 lbs. off my
normal weight of 165. My GP put me on 5mg of Tapazol a day and sent me to specialist. After blood work Endocrinologist put me on 30mg of Tapazol per day. I put all my weight back on and was feeling great, back to my old-self. Had my eyes checked by both an Optomotrist and an Opthomologist who both gave my eyes a clean bill of health. Endo. reduced Tapazol to 5mg a day again and after further blood work has reccomended removal of my thyroid. Obviously I’m very apprehensive about removal of my thyroid. He wants to schedule RAI procedure. Anyone
have a similar story?? If I do have RAI procedure done, what can I look
forward to in the future. I’ve always looked after myself pretty decently and have kept in good shape, but I am very uneasy about this whole ordeal… -Dave
