Hi – I had an RAI on 1/28/97 – I just took my first post-RAI blood test and my
doctor said that although my levels had improved he would have preferred better
results – I’ll get my next test on April 4 – Is there a chance that the RAI is
still working and will get me down to acceptable levels?? Any insight appreciated.

        Hi Kelly.

The RAI does most of its damage to your thyroid in the first few days, before it all leaves your body. However, usually the thyroid doesn’t actually die enough to alleviate hyper symptoms for six weeks-six months, depending on the RAI dose you got and other factors. It could be a long time yet before yours stops dying–so yes, there’s lots of reason to think your treatment worked. With my dose of 10 millicuries, it took over three months before I went hypo, which I think is fairly average. Hopefully that encourages you. Do you know your RAI dose?

          Hi kellyb

I had RAI on January 20. My PCP has taken TSH, T4 and CBC every two weeks. My TSH hasn’t moved, it is still very low. However my T4 is all over the place. At first it was coming down and he was hopeful about removing PTU, then it jumped up again. Two weeks later it was down, now it’s up again. I too would like some information on the progress of RAI. So all you veterans out there please clue us nebies in!

          Brenda
