    Hi Beth,

I was warned that I might become very hyper for a while after RAI. It was explained to me that the damage caused to the thyroid causes leakage of both T3 and T4. I had a really bad 24 hours starting on day 3. This was, according to my doctor, beacause I had a T3 leakage. Since then I have had minor ups and downs, all put down to the damaged thyroid cells leaking their storage of hormones as they are destroyed due to RAI. I am now at 11 weeks and beginning to show hypo symptoms. I too thought I was on my way to the ER but found that fairly large doses of propranolol helped.

    Beth:

What Brenda has described is called Escape Phenomenon. It happened to me after both doses of RAI that I received.

I just wanted to know if anyone else responded to RAI as I have.
Two weeks after the treatment, I landed in the hospital for a week
with chest pains, rapid hearbeat, irregular heart rate, dizziness,
weakness… The general conclusion was that when my thryoid became
swollen from the RAI, it pressed against my carotid arteries which
caused havoc on my circulatory system. But the doctors are still not
    sure.

Any of this sound familar to any else?

    Thanks

    hi brenda,

you would really think i would know more but it has been about 4 yrs
since my last rai. since i can’t remember anything, don’t know if i’ll
be much help. as far as i can remember, i never went hypo during rai
treatments. i think if i had, they probably would not have given me
three treatments. i could not take any of the medications, ptu, etc.
had reactions of some type to all of them. i was so sick back then, i
wouldn’t have cared if they had put me in the middle of the road and
ran over me with a mack truck. i’m alot better today, but if under alot of stress,
which i am, levels go nuts. this disease is so crazy. i have both hypo
and hyper symptoms and my doc said that is not unusual.right now i am taking .112
of synthroid. go back to doc in about six weeks. hopefully i will have
    more for you.
    kitty
