I was on PTU for about five or six weeks, and I took about that much to start out. The PTU pills only come in 50mg amounts, and the initial doses are upwards of 300mg/day. I think I was on 450mg. which wasn’t the max. PTU also is only good for about eight hours. Therefore you have to take it frequently, and get the best results from it, by spacing it out correctly.

Hi Amy – When my daughter Lisa started on PTU she also had to take
it around the clock. We got one of those pill cases that holds 4
doses for each day. We filled this at the beginning of the week and
at a glance we knew if she had remember to take each dose. The alarm
clock was set for one dose during the night as well. Another idea is
to use a watch with an alarm. I have a student in my second grade class
who sets his alarm so he’ll remember his asthma medication before gym
    class. :-) Good luck!

I had an allergic reaction to tapazole & I was taking 2 pills – 2 x day, but now I’m on PTU & have to take 2 pill – 4 x day. This may seem trivial but I can never keep track or remember all those pills. I don’t have a problem taking beta blockers, but I suppose I get an instant gratification from beta blockers. Does anyone have to take that many PTU?

Yes Amy, I did take that much back when they first diagnosed me. The they put me on 3 pills 3x a day. It didn’t stop the heart racing. What did happen is that my teeth became brittle, I had heart paplitations more often which landed me in the emergency room 3 separate occassions. Plus I was using beta blockers to boot!
    I hope this helped.
