You’ve got to keep in mind that there are a LOT of different problems that can appear similar, and yet be totally different. While it is possible for pretibial myxedema to appear in other parts of the body besides the shins, it is EXTREMELY rare. It almost always only hits the front of the legs from the ankles to the knees. Since a doctor looked at the elbows and gave a different diagnosis, I would believe that. And since it is caused by the ANTIBODIES and not the thyroid hormone levels, getting rid of it has nothing to do with the hormone. It’s the same with the eye problems. They are separate from the thyroid problem. So, if you suspect pretibial myxedema you need to see — most likely — a good dermatologist. They know more about handling it than anybody else.
