One of the best things you can do is to read about your disease read some of the posts that have been posted in the last few days and you will find some info on very good books.
I had RAI and did not that the support of this board at that time. I went into it blindly and every setback I had was just that, because I was told I was cured. In a sense you are cured if your thyroid dies the first time around. But you will have to deal with some side affects of your hormones changing and taking medication. I am glad I did the RAI. I just wished I had know what was going to occur while I was becoming hypo. I would not have been scared or thought that I was crazy.
I have been given a lot of support through this BB. Firstly, you will be different but you will be a lot like the rest of us. We all have like symptoms and we all have our own. We have different bodies and we have different families. Know that you will get better but you may always be on thyroid medication. Understand you do have a few things you will go through, loss of hair maybe, maybe not. Depression maybe but maybe not. Eye problems again the same. Just be aware what can happen and be ready to deal with it in a logical way.
Ask your doctor questions, write them down so you dont’ forget during your visits. Be an imformed paticipant not just someone that gets treated and really doesn’t understand. It is pretty simple, we are warriors as we all say. We have to deal with these problems as they come along. We can and we will survive. A day at a time. Read, ask questions and don’t be afraid to cry or ask for help. You are not alone, welcome and congratulations you have taken the first step to understanding your illness by writing your questions on this BB. Or by just reading all the postings and reading books about graves. If I had found this BB in July of 98 I would not have gone through the pain of depression I went through this winter. I would have known I was normal well as normal as can be expected:) and I would not have suffered in fear of what next?
Good Luck and keep smiling you will get to feeling better, belive in that one thought and ask your family to read this BB, it will help them to understand.
None of us can answer how long it will take you to feel better after RAI, I was told two weeks to 6 months. My throat hurt but I really didn’t feel any different. My eyes stopped bulging within two weeks. I did not start thyroid replacement for three months. Then I started to lose my hair, my complexion got really bad and I gained wieght. I think I gained weight because I was depressed. Only I kept thinking I shouldn’t be and that my hair loss was because of weather changes. Now I know why I felt these things. I also didnt go to the eye doctor because I was told that my eyes would be fine. Well I finally went after I had pink eye and it wouldn’t go away. I found out that my left eye has a little compression and I need to watch my eyes. So the moral of the story is again be informed. Because I am informed I am stronger and feel 100% better about life. Get counseling if you need it can really help, do whatever it takes to be healthy, you deserve it. I do know being hypo is better in some ways then hyper, I can breathe again. I will become euthyroid soon I believe. Hope this isn’t to long and repeatative I am not a writer, just a warrior, and proud of it
