I’m specifically looking for literature on how lifestyle affects the degree of symptom manifestation: diet, exercise, meditation, etc. Can anyone recomment any literature (hard copy or electronic)? I’m currently living in a foreign country, so access to English (or French) literature isn’t easily attainable.
My thanks in advance for your help. My thanks also to the creator of this bulletin board.
AnonymousApril 3, 2000 at 1:51 amPost count: 93172I was just diagnosed with GD and have been put on Tapazole. The impression that my Endo gave me was that GD was a “Curable” disease. I see this is not the case from reading some personal stories. I am scared about the RAI I will be undergoing and the after effects. Any advice?
AnonymousApril 3, 2000 at 8:31 amPost count: 93172Hi Whitney,
I would just advise you to read as much as you can on Graves Disease (which you must be doing to have found this bb!!) and make your own informed decision with your doctor. If you need time to make a decision then take the time…you are in the drivers seat here!! Take care!!AnonymousApril 4, 2000 at 9:12 amPost count: 93172Good morning one and all. I want to tell you about another book which isn’t yet on the recommended reading list. It is “Healing Options: A Report on Graves’ Disease Treatments” by me, Kate Flax. I wrote this book because it is the book I wanted to read when I was first diagnosed with Graves. Dr. Christiane Northrup, lecturer and author of “Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom”, says “Anyone who is struggling to find meaning in the experience of Graves’ Disease will find hope, healing and inspiration in this book.” I am a 50 year-old woman and I have Graves’ disease. It was diagnosed in 1991-not untypically, years after onset. Six months after diagnosis, I received (US)modern medicine’s standard protocol for controlling the disease, radioactive iodine (RAI)-erradication of my thyroid gland. Since then I have come to believe that modern medicine’s practice of “symptom treatment” does not provide all the care and “cure” a body needs. After this radiation, I developed new symptoms that were terribly difficult to live with because I had become, in almost perfect textbook fashion, hypothyroid. I then began taking synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medication. This medicaiton was meant to restore me to a state of balance. However, I never felt my “normal” self again. What was I to do then? I decided that this time, rather than simply looking for a quick fix for my symptoms, I would shift my focus to explore the causes of my chronic illness. I would look deeper in search of true healing. What is healing? Healing is a process of restoring a person to spiritual wholeness, to peace of mind and body.
I wrote this book to heal myself and to be of help to others. In it I tell my story and that of many others who have experienced Graves’ disease. I have heard and still hear hundreds of these stories through my work as an NGDF support group leader and my activity in the Thyroid Federation International. I feel that anyone experiencing any type of chronic illness must be responsible for him/herself. Healing does not respond to magic bullets. It is often a long process requiring the practice of many different complementary modalities such as diet (nutrition), art, music and/or talk therapy, mind/body exercises, relaxation therapy, etc. In this self-help process, I urge you to choose any complimentary care professional as carefully as you would choose a physician. In my book I provide references for finding these professoinals, explanations of many different healing options,as well as other useful information that may help you in your quest for wellness. I wish you great success with your healing.AnonymousApril 4, 2000 at 9:17 amPost count: 93172Troy, I have just posted information about my book (the only book on Graves’ disease)”Healing Options: A Report on Graves’ Disease Treatments” It is available on this site through amazon.com.
