I was knocked out for the first few strabismus surgeries. I will be awake for this one. They will use valium to calm me down and a novacain local for the strabismus surgery. I have enought needles in the eyes to think I can handle this one OK.
Hope this helped.

I was talking to a graves eye specilaist today about my upcoming surgery. I asked him what type of anesthesia do they use for the procedure? His reply was, “just valium”.
This doctor is not the one doing the surgery ut I am having the procedure done out of state but did anyone of you just have valium as your anesthesia. When i heard this it made me more paranoid about the procedure. I think my eyes which were dialted too became undialated. (haha) Since you all have it done could you share with me if this is possible or the means of anesthesia they used? If this doctor is wrong he should not be giving out incorrect information like this. Thanks again for your support.Dee

June 30, 1998 at 1:42 pmPost count: 93172Hi Dee, When I first read your post I couldn’t believe you would not have anesthesia, however on seeing what Jake says I guess all doctors use different procedures. I was put under with a local to do the stitches and was told that when I woke up we would wait a few hours and then my Ophthalmologist would do the adjustments. This is what happened. It was hard for me to keep my eyes still while he was doing the adjustments but I did get through it – then I was taken back to my hospital room and given painkillers. I’m sure you could ask to be given anesthesia because it appears it is done both ways. If I had my way I would be knocked out before even arriving at the hospital – I am so terrified of needles, hospitals and all that goes with it. I should be used to it by now but unfortunately my child like feelings have not changed.
Wishing you luck, whichever route you go. What is the date of your surgery? I will put you in my prayers for a successful surgery.
Take care, SAS
