Smiley, you used the perfect word at the end of your post — ignorance. The people at your workplace have no clue as to how devastating this disease is. They not only don’t have to see a doctor “all the time,” they don’t have to see one for the rest of their lives for the same disease. They’re wrong about it not being a big deal, and they’re wrong about it being easy to treat. (I’ve had two RAI’s.)
I’m glad you vented and feel better now. That’s what this BB is all about. We all need to do this from time to time. Nobody knows what you’re going through like we who are living it too. Vent alll you want. I think it’s therapeutic.
I have somewhat of the same problem, only it’s with my husband’s grandmother. We were very close personally. We live about 800 miles away, but we emailed frequently and visited as often as possible. Once I started telling her about my disease, she just said, “I don’t know anything about it. I’ve never heard of Graves’ Disease.” Now I don’t hear from her much. I really don’t think there’s much of an excuse for ignorance. Your co-workers and my grandmother-in-law could do a little research if they really cared. So I say we should just go on with our miserable lives, and not worry about their support. I’m sure you have a doctor’s excuse for your time off, so they can’t do anything about that.
Stick with us and we’ll try to help you through your depression. Take care and God bless.

I know how you feel about comments at work. People at my work (some)- have said – but isn’t it good to feel hyper – think of all the work you can get done; and – oh you’ll be cured in a couple months & feel good as new. Whatever feeling new might be…….One person thought Graves was a type of cancer & wondered when I was going to start chemotherapy & radiation..
I think it’s just a lack of education on the area of Graves and Thyroid. Alot of people don’t think thyroid problems are a big deal and that it is a common complaint – but until they’ve felt what we feel – don’t even go there ~~~~ and try a little compassion (it could happen to them!) -
