AnonymousFebruary 18, 1998 at 11:44 pmPost count: 93172Has anyone reading the posts ever had a severe sore throat after they started taking tapazole?
I had been taking tapazole for about 3 1/2 weeks when I developed a very bad sore throat. I also had had some minor itching and rash. The sore throat is being treated by my MD but have not called the endo. May call him tomorrow.
Taking 30mg of tapazole per day. Any help would be appreciated.
AnonymousFebruary 19, 1998 at 3:55 amPost count: 93172Dear Tom,
I’m taking Tapazole since september 97′, had sudden high fever and sore throat towards the end of October and went to ER (as MD and Endo adviced) they checked white blood cells count did some other blood works and nothing was wrong, gave me anyways antibiotics that I took together with a lot of vitamin C in a couple of days I was as good as new. Then I got a strong cold while in Italy (my homeland) just took really a lot of vitamin C (5 to 10grs/day) and I got rid of it in a few days. This is my experience till now, I can only suggest that you get your white blood cells count tested and may be the thyroid hormones too. I’m a military spouse so run to hospital whenever they told me I should, I get also doublechecked in Italy (where health care is provided by the government almost for free!!!!) and will see a “super” endo in Switzerland in March. I keep taking a lot of vitamin C and trying to stay away as much as possible from crowded and “germsfull” locations (except for airplanes……. sigh!!!!!)
I wish you well and excuse me for spelling errors.

Good luck.

AnonymousMarch 5, 1998 at 11:12 amPost count: 93172Connie, I don’t know the answer to this but would reason if thyroid is enlarged and pressing on your throat, it could cause soreness. Also common after RAI. Hope this helps.

AnonymousMarch 5, 1998 at 11:59 amPost count: 93172I don’t know about the hyperthyroid part, Connie, but the books I have do mention “soreness” in the throat area in relation to thyroiditis. The infection that causes thyroiditis causes the thyroid to become inflammed, and I guess swollen.

AnonymousMay 14, 1998 at 11:33 amPost count: 93172I’ve been on tapazole for 7 days now, and have had a sore
throat for 5 days. I know it says on the warnings to stop taking
it if you develop a sore throat, but my understanding is that the concern
there is tapazole can suppress the immune system, and I’m not quite
believing it could be so suppressed this quickly. My question is
am I being foolish in waiting-I’ve taken echinachea as I have always
done for a sore throat and this time it isn’t working. I’m reluctant
to call my endo, who’s an hour and a half away and I’ve only
met once, and am tempted to wait a few more days. Input?
Thanks again-AnonymousMay 14, 1998 at 12:39 pmPost count: 93172Linda,
The most potentially serious (and possibly life-threatening)
side effect of Tapazole is something called agranulocytosis
in which your which blood cells (key component of the
immune system) start disappearing from your body. I was
told that if I develop certain symptoms like fever, sore throat,
or mouth ulcers then I need to go to the ER immediately to have my white count checked. Fortunately, agranulocytosis is rare and usually reversible. If you have a fever and a sore throat then I would definately
call your Endo and get his/her opinion. If you can’t reach
them personally, I would head to a local ER for some blood work.
Better safe than sorry.
