      Hi Lonnie

Try and elevated the end of your bed. Also a bag of frozen pea as an compress works great. Just label the peas for use on eyes and not cooking. It is difficult to say how long this will last. Just hang in there and try these tricks for your eyes.

        Hi, Lonnie:

Yes, precisely the same thing happened to me. My eyes were swollen from the eyebrow to the cheek bone, and turned mauve. I looked like a battered wife. It was ironic, really. There I was, finally feeling better than I had in months, and that was when I started to LOOK sick. Go figure.

What to do? First keep a sense of humor. It will go away. It’s ugly and distressing, but it is temporary. Next, cold compresses can help to reduce the swelling. Zip-lock sandwich bags with frozen peas inside are good: they mold to the eye lines, and you can refreeze without worrying that you will mistakenly cook the peas and eat them. Raise the head of your bed, if possible, by putting a brick under the legs at the head of the bed. This will help reduce the swelling increase that typically happens overnight. Fourth, you can go to a superb cosmetics counter and ask for industrial strength make up: that’s what I did. We had a wonderful time trying to find products that would minimize the look. Although, if I had to do it over again, I would go to a theatrical makeup supply place. The products I bought really did not do much to make me feel prettier. Finally, smile. Take the time to go in front of your mirror, and see how you look staring, glum, or smiling. I’m pretty positive that, like me, you will look much, much better when you are smiling, even though the eyes are puffy. That bit of knowledge helped me to put thoughts of how I looked out of my mind, and just interact normally with everyone, making sure to smile as much as possible.

        Take care, this will pass.

It has only been a few weeks for me too. My eyelids are now drooping so bad that I can feel them touching my eyelashes. When I saw my Endo for the first time a few weeks ago, he also said my eyes were swollen and we would watch them. My eyes are making me look old. Hopefully, this will improve soon.

Hi everyone…Thank God for this bulletin board and all the help I have recieved…truly it is such a treasure. I have told all my doctors to recommend it to their patients who have our health problem.
I have had a sesitivity to starting on synthroid after RAI, I couldnt tolerate the higher dose they started me on ( 100mcg,and not even 50mcg ) soooo they have me on 12.5mc and then will move me up in awhile to 25 and so on. Now I am having really puffy, swollen eylids and great big bags under my eyes and also they are watering almost constantly the past few days . Not only does it feel awful,it looks awful and I dont even want to go out in public.I have never had any problems with my eyes related to Graves in any way until now. Is there anything I can do to help reduce the puffiness or is this likely from being hypo at the moment…its all so confusing.Anyone else had this problem and have it related to being hypo ? Will this settle down as I get my levels stablized and am able to move up on my synthroid dosage ? My last blood tests ( 2 weeks ago ) showed my TSH at 43, so I am told I am definitely hypo and thats when this eye thing began. Thanks so much. I pray for all of us everyday. God bless.Lonnie

can anyone answer this then?? i have one eye that you see just a smidge more white and the other is just a little droopy in the lid. which one is TED ? the endo said the larger and the eye dr said the droopy one?? either way they are dry and the larger eye has numbness around the brow area but if i went to s plastic surg. to get the other hiked up a bit they would match…or am i wasting my time because either one might change…the dr’s didnt seem to have an answer and were debating on which one is TED…well my sight is extremly good!! the eye dr was extremly impressed that i had such unbeleiveable vision after 40. that was the good new!! and info would help…..

My graves was diagnosied because of the same eye problems you describe except for I had AWFUL pain in my eyes. My eye Dr had me to ‘soak” my eyes with heat twice a day for 10 minutes. that and use tears constantly and the gel terars at night. I had the eye symptoms before I had any thyroid symptoms. I hope this helps. I had RAI on Friday and now just waiting to see what’s next.
