Hi, Connie:
It’s probably not a bad idea to consult with an endocrinologist, but if you decide not to, keep this “episode” in mind, for future reference. Thyroiditis is basically a viral infection which can cause our thyroids to go over-active, but the body’s immune system eventually flushes the virus out, and eliminates it. With Graves, it is possible, although not likely, to have a flare-up and remission. The antibodies, for no known reason, DO wax and wane naturally. About two years before I got really sick with Graves, I went to the doctor because of of too-rapid heart-rate, and tremors, inability to sleep, etc. We were all under a lot of stress at that point in time, because we were rebuilding after Hurricane Andrew and having terrible problems with contractors, materials, etc., so my doctor, without ordering bloodwork, gave me a prescription for a tranquilizer. I think about half the population in S. Florida was taking either tranquilizers or mood elevators during that period of time. ; ) But after coming down with Graves’, I have wondered if that wasn’t simply an initial flare-up that remitted on it’s own. It might have been. It might not have been. Because the doctor ASSUMED, and didn’t order a physical, I’ll never know. It’s also somewhat beside the point. It DID go away. When it re-occured, however, I spent some months fighting for a diagnosis, when the doctor wanted to push tranquilizers again. (After all, I had a HISTORY of being “nervous”, right?) So, keep it in mind. Should you ever experience something similar again, you would want to have your thyroid checked.

Last week doctor ordered thyroid uptake and scans at hospital and put me on Inderal for the tremors and heart pounding. Went to see Dr. yesterday and he said hospital tests were inconclusive as to whether I had thyroiditis or graves disease and is now referring me to Endocrinologist. The last two days I have used no Inderal and my BP is 102/60 and I am so tired so he thinks my condition is reversing. What does any of this mean?
