There have been a number of us on this board who have had unexplained problems with our ears, but there is no known association directly to Graves’ Disease that I know of. In my case, the Eustachian tubes closed down, and meds didn’t help, so finally tubes were put in my ears to relieve the awful pressure. My ENT doc said he thought it must be related to my “endocrine problems”, but didn’t know why or how.

I am curious if anyone out there has experienced hearing loss due to Graves’ or any of the medications related to Graves’. I am on Tapazole and Propranolol. I have seen my reg Dr, who knows very little about Graves’, and have put in a call to my Endo with no call back as of yet. A ringing in my left ear started about a week ago and today, I had a hearing test and found I have lost 75% of the hearing in that ear. My other ear is down 25% but that is still within normal range at this point. If you know if/how this can be related at all, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks…
TY for the input. I am a little scared at the loss of hearing, and no explanation at this point…
Hi,
I had this problem on my left ear when I was hypo after RAI, it only was the left side however, and everything came back to normal once the hypo was over, months later ! Hope this helps, take care.
AnnI’ve had ringing in both ears for what seems like a long time now, somedays louder than others. Was diagnosed with GD 3 1/2 weeks ago and started on PTU and Lopressor immediately. I believe I’ve had GD for a long time and it went undiagnosed, but due to increasing symptoms, i.e. tremors, I finally went to see my MD and was referred to the endo after blood work came back with above normal thyroid panel. I had thought it might be part of GD but was going to check with my endo next week.
Good luck!hi,
i experienced hear loss for about four months. before i was diagnosed and then two months later. it got better after RAI. hope you will too!
hang in there, there is hope.Does anyone know anything about if there is hearing loss associated with Graves disease?
Someone told me today that their ENT doctor told them that all autoimmune diseases run the risk of causing hearing loss.
She originally thought it was her sinuses. I still suspect that this might be the cause. What does anyone else know?
My endocrinologist is very knowledgeable, and he isn’t aware of any relationship between Graves’ and ear problems, at least such as those I’ve been having. My ENT put tubes in my ears to relieve the pressure of closed eustacian tubes, but doesn’t know WHY they are closed (this results in reduced hearing also). Allergies were suspected, but aggressive treatment didn’t help at all—so now my ENT “guesses” it’s something to do with my “endocrine problems”, but he doesn’t really know.
If you find out something credible on this subject, I’d appreciate very much if you’d let me know.

My endo told me that any sinus problem becomes aggravated with Graves. Allergies become more intense, and asthma can become more problematic. He said this was because the immune system and stamina are weakened. I found my allergies and colds to be much, much worse, and I cannot safely take many decongestants because of the high level of anithistamine in them (sped my heart up 3 times the safe rate, even with my beta blocker). I did start developing more ear infections, and as I cannot take high-strength antihistamines/decongestants, it takes longer to releieve them. People do not always know if they have an ear infection, and an untreated one can damage someone’s hearing. My step cousin also has Graves, she’s 11 years old. they knew she had if for several years, and when she was 9, she went into a thyroid storm, requiring immeidate surgery. The next time her hearing was tested, they found she had lost hearing in one ear.
Has anyone experienced any type of hearing loss with your symptoms? This is my second round with Graves. I have TED and pretibia myxedema along with it. Within the past couple of months it seems I’m not hearing as well. I have to ask people to repeat things and have problems with background noise. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
