Hi, One thing I might mention is that usually it takes more than a week for a med change to take place with thyroid medications. Most the time it is usually 3-4 at least. Alot of doctors will test their patients at the 3 month interval when medications are changed often, but not much before that. Be patient and give it some time…I know it is hard, especially when you are not feeling well at all. Waking up in the middle of the night with your heart racing is a very scary feeling, I know, I have been there. As always, keep in touch with your doctor with any concerns you have. A good doctor will listen to your concerns, fears, and how you are feeling.
Hugs,
EllieAnonymousMay 6, 2004 at 9:38 pmPost count: 93172It is hard…. I am so afraid there is something wrong with me…. it depresses me really bad. It was bad enough that my endo wasn’t even willing to go that extra mile and explain things. My doctor is the one who originally diagnosed it when no one else would @ 13 so…. she makes me feel better. I haven’t had a “bad” med change in a LONG time so this one is particularily scary because my chest hurts on and and off and my resting heart rate it a higher than usual so…. if that seems normal to you (Ellie)…. I appreciate that. I just hate feeling so bummed this past week or two. Thank you. If anyone else has went through, I’d love to hear about their experience.
AnonymousMay 6, 2004 at 10:58 pmPost count: 93172I know what your going threw because Im in the same boat as of now. Are you on any anti anxiety drugs? They help while we get adjusted. It takes a good six to eight weeks before the docs can see if your on the right dosage. Ive been bummed too this week. Hang in there!
AnonymousMay 6, 2004 at 11:10 pmPost count: 93172For background, I am 22yrs old. Had RAI treatment at 13 and now I have been hypo ever since.
Recently, I got a med change (Levoxyl .1 increased to .112 – I have been higher in the past) I hadn’t been feeling well. Racy heart. Chest pain. Achy. Emotional. EXTREMELY worried. My endocrinlogist ran blood work and my TSH was too low so I was getting over medicated and put back to .1. After a week of not feeling better, I was basically ignored and went to family physican who thought it WAS my medicine and was little distribed my endo was saying it was unrelated. I had an EKG done then a 24hr heart monitor. Has this ever happened to anyone where you ended up okay because my anxiety has been TERRIBLE. I was supposed to get my results today but my doctor hadn’t seen them yet so I have to wait till tomorrow. ANY feedback would be appreciated. Thank you for listening.

I get bummed to the point that I think I won’t be able to live a normal life (which I know I will be able to) but the whole experience has just sucked to be completely honest. I hope this will be over soon. Thank you for sharing too.
AnonymousMay 7, 2004 at 1:38 pmPost count: 93172I had the same type of problem about 3 years ago. I had been stable on Levothroid for about 10 years and all of a sudden I had the same symptoms that you described -racing heart, emotional, and extremely worried. My endo tested me and said I had become toxic with too much thyroid hormone. He cut my dose back and it took a while to see some difference. Eventually, I felt like I had gone hypo even though the test results tested “normal.” I kept up the new dose for several years, all the while testing “normal.” I finally felt so bad from depressed symptoms and brain fog that I found another doctor. She is wonderful. She tested for T3 to see if my T4 was converting to T3. I was not converting. She put me on cytomel and I felt like a piece of my brain had been plugged back in! I felt normal for the first time in several years.
I know that our bodies change constantly and we just have to modify our treatment as necessary. What worked once, may not always be the right answer forever.
Good luck on your progress!
AnonymousMay 7, 2004 at 9:05 pmPost count: 93172Yea, I am on Levoxyl and Cytomel. I started Cytomel last year. It was to help with the fact that wasn’t able to lose weight with my good diet and exercise.
I did an EKG that was normal. Did the 24hr monitor and that was normal. But, my stupid on and off chest pain is still occuring so I am going to have a ultrasound done. I don’t know how to feel about it. This other woman who is a receptionist at my doctor’s talked to me and said she did all the same things and it was just from getting too much thyroid hormone and it straightened out. I am going to do a stress test too. Has anyone else out there done these things after getting too much medicine and it all came back normal and you DID feel better eventually?
I just didn’t realize how much “too much” hormone could mess you up. I haven’t had a reaction (if I can remember) since I was first diagnosed back when I was 13 and of course trying to get all my stuff in check. Thanks everybody who responded and keeps responding.
AnonymousMay 7, 2004 at 11:34 pmPost count: 93172Hi,
You may want to ask your doc about going off the cytomel T3 to see if you feel better, that is a very potent drug and maybe the t3 is making you feel hyper. You may want to ask your doc about that.
memeAnonymousMay 8, 2004 at 8:10 amPost count: 93172I will definitely do that. I am almost afraid to going off Cytomel because I don’t want to be back at square one feeling like “this” again. Ah. So much annoyance.
At any rate, this morning I think I am starting to feel a little better. Last night I couldn’t fall right asleep because my chest felt weird. Ah. But, this morning it doesn’t feel too bad. Hopefully, this will be the start for a turn around and not go the other way. We’ll see.
AnonymousMay 8, 2004 at 9:39 amPost count: 93172Talk to your doc about the t3. maybe you just need to bump it down a notch. I remember my doc wanting to try me on that and he said if I felt chest pain, nervousness, shakiness or irritation to call him. Call your doc monday and tell him whats going on, it could just be a med adjustment for you and some people need the t3 for just a little while then thier body starts making it like it should.
Let us know
MemeAnonymousMay 9, 2004 at 11:43 amPost count: 93172I was told by my Endo that it takes 6-8 weeks to see a leveling out of a change in synthetic hormone. So, it will just take time, sweetie. Hang in there. Your body has changed a lot since you were 13, so now changes will be needed in thyroid hormone as well. Makes sense to me. Joy in NoGA mtns.
