I am a new guy here so I will be brief. I live in Seattle and wish to find or start a support group here
For Grave’s (which I don’t have now as my thyroid was removed) and
thyroid cancer. Which they cannot decide if I still have or not!

I’ve only had a thyroid scan that did show a nodule.

They can spot “nodules”, and determine whether they are “cold” or “hot”. (That is, whether they are not taking up any iodine to speak of –cold — or are taking up a lot of iodine, relative to other parts of the thyroid — hot). Essentially, one type (and I don’t know which it is) is never cancerous. The other type might be, although aren’t usually, but the doctors can use the scan to determine whether there is a need to explore the situation further. If your doctor said there wasn’t a problem, then he is basing it on the info that he got in the scan.

I was diagnosed with Grave’s in June 04. Am on ATD’s and a beta blocker. Have been feeling crummy for a while. My Dr. upped my meds and I am finally feeling almost normal. However, I just had to call my Dr. yesterday. I all of a sudden was having really sharp pain at the base of my neck-right where the thyroid is when I swallow food. I am also hoarse and my neck is tender. I went in to see her yesterday and she was amazed at how large my thyroid had gotten since the last time she had seen me. She did blood tests and all is normal. She ended up consulting an endo(she’s an internist)because she was unsure. Now I go in to have an ultrasound tomorrow am, with the knowledge that if they find anything abnormal or a nodule, I will be having a biopsy. The endo thinks what I have may not be grave’s but either multinodule goiter? or Cancer. Can you have Grave’s and Thyroid cancer? I am definately hyperthyroid. I am so confused and worried.
Does anyone have any insight? Or has anyone had Grave’s and thyroid cancer? I just don’t know what to think?Thank you for listening!

They are taking your description of symptoms seriously, and looking for any and all possible reasons. That is good — they are not ignoring you. And doctors typically give us a huge list of all the ugly possibilities, just to cover themselves. I almost did not get gall bladder surgery once, because of such a list.
I understand that you are worried; I would be too. But if you can divert yourself until you actually “know” what is going on that would be in your best interests.
And, if the worst should materialize, there is a great support group for thyroid cancer patients on the Web. We have a link to their website from the main NGDF home page.
Good luck,
