Hello Everyone,
It seems that all I do is write about my problems here and I just hate to bother you all. But I have been taking Toporol XL for over a year now. The dosages have ranged from 200mg daily to 400mg daily. Right now I’m taking 200mg and my pulse rate is between 91 and 120. Does anyone know of any other type of beta blocker I might suggest to my doctor. I’m very concerned that my Graves has damaged my heart beyond repair. Please Help. Thank you once again for always being here for me and giving me such great information and help.

LouisaAnonymousAugust 20, 2007 at 2:31 pmPost count: 93172I also took Atenolol and it (within a dose or so) did the trick and I did not have any irregular heartbeats/fast beating after that. It is also easy to regulate and I never had to change my dosage like it sounds like you have had to do. I sure hope you start feeling better.
KimAnonymousAugust 20, 2007 at 7:22 pmPost count: 93172Dear Kim and Louisa,
Thank you so much for repling to my post and telling me about Atenolol. Unfortunately, I don’t think I would be able to take that, I’ll have to ask my doctor. I have had two bad liver test recently and will have it tested again in a couple of weeks. I’m also taking 90 mg of cymbalta for depression. I know I should go to my doctor and tell her whats going on, but I just can’t afford to. I have been off work for almost 2 years now and have been turned down by SSD 3 times. So I try not to go to all my doctors if I don’t have too. I’m also dealing with my TED and having to decide if I want to have Orbital Radiation done a 2nd time or not. I still owe over a thousand dollars from my first round back in November. Wow, I just kept going on and on, I’m so sorry. Thank you again and I hope this post finds both of you feeling okay.

AnonymousAugust 21, 2007 at 2:18 pmPost count: 93172Dear grneyedlady,
It made me very sad to read of your situation. Mine is similar in some respects, although it sounds like I’m older than you, so have Medicare which should cover most of my medical expenses, although I’ve been having some problems with this. I, too, have moderate to severe TED and just completed a 9 day orbital radiation regime last month. Right now I’m on a slow taper of oral Prednisone —my current dose is 30 mg q day. Some of my eye symptoms seem to be returning, so I’m fearful that I may need to have the eye decompression surgery in the near future. Because of my age of 66 and the fact that I do have a mild to moderate lung condition or COPD —even though I never smoked or was exposed to significant amounts of second hand smoke — I’ve very fearful of having to have a general anesthetic and the possible side effects of the eye surgery. My pulse rate is also faster than it should be, but I’ve been told that beta blockers aren’t recommended for those patients with COPD. Keep trying for the SSI — I’ve heard of people having to try 4 or 5 times. Is there a Legal Aid Society in your area as, perhaps, a lawyer might be able to help you for a minimal or no charge. Don’t give up —- we need to remain positive, but I know it’s easier said than done. Good luck. NinaAnonymousAugust 21, 2007 at 2:58 pmPost count: 93172Nina,
Thank you so much for the lovely response. It’s so wonderful to have people such as yourself here to help cheer us up. I am a bit younger then you, I’m 48. I have already hired an attorney but in Florida it’s a very, very, very slow process. I just came back from my eye doctor only to find that my eyes have worsen and I am scheduled for decompression surgery on the 7th of September. I know this is a stepping stone for me in getting better. Thank you again for putting a smile on my face and I hope that I can do the same for you. So we both must hold our heads up high and say this disease will NOT get us.

AnonymousAugust 25, 2007 at 8:00 amPost count: 93172Dear Gryneyedladi,
Sorry to learn re your need for the eye decompression surgery. I fear that I’ll be advised that I’ll need this also. Since my daily dose of Prednisone ha been reduced fro 60 to 30 mg q day, my eye symptoms are starting to redevelop. I’ll be seeing my eye MD on 8/28, so will see what he thinks. I just completed my orbital radiation treatments about a month ago, and, I believe, the radiologist said that it takes several months to determine the effectiveness of that treatment. The eye MD wanted me to have the surgery in July as I don’t believe he has much faith in the radiation. From what I’ve been told, the surgery sounds worse than what it is. I wish I could attend the conference this Fall in Cincinnati, but I just don’t have the financial means to do so. I hope to be able to attend a conference in the future. Hope you are able to get on disability, but, in our minds, we can’t look at ourselves as being disabled. We have to try to remain positive, which I think we’re both doing. Good luck with the eye surgery — I’ll be anxious to hear how it goes.
Take care, NinaAnonymousAugust 27, 2007 at 7:30 pmPost count: 93172Dear Nina,
I will keep you in my prayers and hope that everything goes well with you. I know I shouldn’t think of myself as disabled but in the State of Florida, you must been deemed disabled by Social Security in order to get Medicaid. I wish I was able to work so I could pay for some insurance. My surgery has been canceled due to the fact I don’t live in a county where my doctor does surgery and the hospital denied me since I don’t live in their county. Even though I am almost legally blind, I must keep my head up high and think good thoughts and maybe something will happen to help me. Right now I’m also dealing with a fast heart rate, low blood pressure, liver problems and after my thyroid surgery, I’m having problems with my medicine. My TSH two times now has been .003. I too wish I was able to go to Cincinnati since that’s my home town and my 24yr old son lives there. Okay, time for me to put a smile on my face and stop thinking about all that’s bad and think of happy good thoughts. Thank you for being a friend and trying to keep my spirits up.
