According to my Endo, and what I have read, GD does seem to run in families. I am finding out that cousins, and other relatives had it, but I never knew.

Been meaning to ask if anyone has a family history of other thyroid diseases? The reason I ask is because my baby sister has Graves and both of us have children that have pseudohypoparathyroidism. Both of my boys (different fathers) have it and her daughter has it. Another sister who does not have Graves, her son has it. I think pseudohypoparathyroidism runs on my dad’s side of the family and skips generations.

No one in my family on either side has ever had a thyroid (or serious health) problem, BUT we have lost three cats in the family to hyperthyroidism if that counts.

I too have no family history of Graves or any other thyroid problem but my husband was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s at the same time as I found out I had Graves. I think there is alot more research needed to find out if there is an infectious agent at work in at least some of the forms of thyroid disease. Anyone know of any research done recently?

As far as my family knows, there is no thyroid disease with the exception
of my mom’s sister who had a goiter in her teen years. The big thing in
my family seems to be cancer.

The only thyroid disease I have been able to find on either
side of my family is one Grandmother who had goiter. That’s it!

The only thyroid disease I found in my family history is a great uncle who is hypo..no goiter.

I was diagnosed with Grave’s disease in June and had RAI treatment in July; thyroid problems seem to rage through both sides of my family — which is why I knew to get tested. Both grandmothers had Graves’ disease. My mother, and her brother, and sister are both hypothyroid. My uncle recently had nodules removed from his thyroid. Yikes. My two cousins are hypothyroid and another is hyperthyroid. My siblings were all tested recently, and should be tested every year according to my endocrynologist. So far, no problems for them. Fortunately, we know what to look for! Interestingly enough, I’ve noticed in my reading that premature gray hair (before 30) has a link with thryroid problems, as well as left handedness in men and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Is that where all this grey hair is coming from???????

My Great-Grandfather (on Mom’s side) died of GD, my Mothers sister has GD and one of my younger Brothers has GD. My other 3 brothers won’t go get tested. They say I’m over-reacting. One of them has all the symptoms. He says what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. I worry about my son, because he has a lot of the symptoms also, and like me, no insurance. We both also make to much money for the state funded health care, but not enough to be able to pay for insurance on our own.
