CHAT tonight at 9PM EST. Last week saw many new people join the CHAT. Come join us and meet other people with Graves and get answers to your questions.

We had about 20 or so last week over the two hour period. We chat until 11 PM or so. We do it every Wed. The chat room is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. So if you folks want to chat drop a note on the BB, set up a time and go chat. We facilitate the Wed night chat to keep it on track but have fun too.

I was just diagnosed with Graves disease today and the Doctor wants me to have Radioactive iodine treatment tomorrow. I don’t know what to do. I don’t understand most of it and I don’t want to do something and regret it later. Help please need answers! Thanks

Diagnosed yesterday and radiation today? Need to ask your doctor if it is a thyroid uptake exam. It is a small dose of radiation given to test how the thyroid is working. It is not a dose big enough to kill the thyroid just to see how it works.

Then they will talk courses of treatments. RAI the day after diagnosis is a bit extream unless you are in thyroid storm (then they would have you admitted to the hospital). Since you posted I assume you are at home.

There are three courses of treatment. Antithyroid drugs, RAI and surgery. There is a chance of remission (small) on ATDs but may be worth the try. RAI is usually given with steroids now to help prevent future eye problems.

If the doc wants to do RAI today suggest a second opinion.

Do not forget the CHAT tonight!! Last week we had a problem with the servers splitting and hope it is better by this week. Drop in and visit. We are finding that many people are using AOL or Java CHAT to talk and they seem to hang up more than the people who use mIRC.

At the previous screen is a chat schedule link. You can download mIRC from there. We are working on haveing Doctors joining our CHATs starting In April. Working on the particulars now and lining up speakers.

Looks like the concept will be to post your questions the week prior to the CHAT on the BB. The questions will be grouped and answered as best as can be during our 2 hour CHAT.

Will keep you informed. Jan and I may get on late but we will be there.
