I haven’t taken any cold/sinus pills since I was diagnosed, because they make me very jittery, even though my thyroid levels are pretty normal. What I do for colds now is (and this gets tricky without mentioning brand names — feel free to e-mail me if you want specific brand names):
— I use a menthol-type rub under my nose (and on my chest at night) — really seems to help the stuffiness
— cough medicine containing ONLY guifenisin (I’m sure I butchered that spelling). The brand I buy makes many types of cough medicine. I buy only the one that is an expectorant, and promises no other benefits.
— I snooze with a heating pad against my chest for a while before bedtime. Seems to make the chest congestion less uncomfortable.
— I don’t take much aspirin, etc. because for me, I never notice that it does much.
Colds seem to hit me harder and last longer than they did pre-Grave’s. Get a lot of sleep, that helps too.
Hope you feel better soon.
Hi,
One of the things my “Endo” told me was that since this is a disease involving the auto-immune system, I could/would become more susceptible to catching colds, etc. In my case, with a series of eye/sinus surgeries, head colds, etc. are a little more uncomfortable. I just plan ahead (extra Kleenex, etc.) Good luck.
Hi Everyone,
I was diagnosed in Jan.99 with Graves’ and have had good results so far with Tapazole.I just have a question regarding colds and sinus problems. At the moment I am suffering with a real bad headcold(the past 2 days a weekend) which has settled into my sinus’ can anyone suggest what is recommended for these problems other than the over the counter meds that recommend people who have thyroid disease not take.My endo told me I could take whatever I wanted but it would make me hyper (as in excited). This is fine for during the day but I would like to get some sleep at night. Can anyone answer this? Thanks in advance ……..Marjorie
