Uh-huh! Being on thyoid medication could alter your cholesterol reading by interpreting it higher. Both HDL, bad cholesterol and LDL(???), good cholesterol read higher. Someone else may be different but that was my case when I was tested for cholesterol. I was actually told to disregard the high cholesterol reading due to the thyroid medication. Since then, I make sure I eat or drink (V8 is great!!) at least 3 servings of veggies to keep it down. Hope I have helped.

I don’t know if Graves’ folks need to be extra vigilent in regards to cholesterol or not, but in my case, pre-Graves’ my cholesterol was about 165, with the good better than the bad. When I was diagnosed, my cholesterol was 112, but the good was still better than the bad. When I finally went into remission, my cholesterol was 180. So, for me, the Graves’ seemed to affect my total cholesterol. Luckily for me, I’m genetically lucky in the cholesterol dept. No one in the family has a problem. If someone with Graves’ is predispositioned for bad numbers, it seems to be a good idea to keep an eye on those numbers along with thyroid levels and take steps to keep them in control (meds, eating low fat, lots of veggies & fruit and exercise) as the Graves’ rollercoaster may affect the numbers.

Do Graves’ patients have a special reason to be concerned about Cholesterol?

Have had Grave’s Disease since, if not before, the birth of my daughter in May of 1990. Was not diagnosed until December of 1990. Been on anti-thyroid drugs until ’91 then RAI – didn’t work. Opted for total-thyroidectomy in 92 – I was in emergency state. Since then, I have been on thyroid hormone replacement. Have had both hypo and hyper symptoms. Seems that what’s left of thyroid turns itself on and off. My cholesterol in 90/91 was 123 – my cholesterol today is 281, LDL’s are 197 and HDL is 64. I think this is due to not enough medication – I have had normal and abnormal TSH/Free T-4 – doctor’s pick whatever number seems more normal and go from there. Am seeing a new endo tomorrow – wish me luck! From what I’ve read, high cholesterol seems to have something to do with going hypothyroid. Discuss it with your endocrinologist.
