It is not unusual for children–up to teens–to have thyroidectomies. Obviously, it must be done by a skilled and experienced thyroid surgeon. They are hard, but not impossible to find. I have a list of children who have had thyroidectomies, and if your friend would like, I will give her a couple of names.
