Welcome to the NGDF Bullentin Board.
Yes, a fast heart rate is very common with being hyper with Graves. That is one of the first thing that most people notice. It is not unusual for us to me put on a medicine to lower our heart rate when we are first diagnosised. That is also one of the first medicine that most of us our put on.

I want to add something to what Diane said, because I sense that you are resisting taking your meds. I, too, do not like taking pills. My brain does a lot of very interesting rationalizations about them. But it is extremely important that your heart be protected from the effects of too much thyroid hormone. So, if the doctor prescribes the additional med for you on Thursday, please take it.
Let me explain: when we are hyperthyroid, the heart not only beats too fast (and as a result is not pumping efficiently), but it can beat erratically. Excess thyroid hormone can interrupt the “electrical” system of the heart, causing arrythmias. That is very dangerous to us. And totally unpredictable. So, as Diane said, it is very common for us in the early stages of the disease to be given a drug to help control the heart better.
The Tapazole is designed to interfere with the chemical processes which make thyroid hormone. New thyroid hormone. Until all stored supplies of thyroid hormone are used up from the cells, you will not notice much lowering of your thyroid levels. So, typically, there is no immediate total improvement when we start taking the drugs like Tapazole.
I hope this helps.
Bobbi — NGDF Online FacilitatorHello everyone. This is my 1st post and I have learned a great deal from this bulletin board. I am 32 y.o. and was recently diagnosed with Graves/hyper-thy. My symptoms have been related to chest pain and racing heart. I am taking Tapazole and my blood pressure is lowering, but my heart rate is continuing to rise. Is that normal with this disease? I moved out of the country a week after my diagnosis and do not have access to an endocronologist. The doc suggested med’s to lower my heart rate, if not better by my next appt (Thurs). I am concerned about taking another medication….I don’t like the one I’m on now. Does anyone else with the racing heart symptoms have any suggestions?
Thanks so much for your response. This has definitely helped me! You are right, I am reluctant about the meds, but you’ve helped me to understand the importance of them. It would help if I had a doc here that I felt comfortable with and could explain these things to me, but I’ll work on that too! Thanks again!
