I got home last night from attending my first NGDF conference with my Dad in Boston. It was wonderful and I am so thankful for this foundation, all the amazing doctors that donated their time, all the inspiring people who are living with this disease that have become my friends and Nancy for starting this this whole process back in 1990 to bring awareness and people together.

I have so much information swimming around in my head that I’m giddy. I’m looking forward to seeing my Endo next week and talking to him about some of the information I learned that could be a possibility for my treatment going forward.

Thank you so much for a wonderful, educational, jam packed weekend!

Nancy, the pictures I took during the banquet Saturday night will be on their way to you shortly <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

    Hello,

I was unable to attend the seminar. Would you please share what information you learned? Did they cover anything regarding RAI and its impact on thyroid eye disease, and about those contemplating surgery?

    Thank you,
    Julie

@Jennifer – I’m so glad you enjoyed the conference…it was great to meet you and your dad!

@Julie – There was SO much information presented that it would be hard to summarize it all. The proceedings were videotaped, and some selected videos will be available once the editing process is complete.

As for RAI and the eye disease, the presenters pretty much echoed the guidelines from the ATA and AACE — that all three treatment options are acceptable for most patients, but that patients with moderate-to-severe TED will want to use caution before pursuing RAI.

For thyroid surgery, I just found out about a patient education site from the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Here is the link; you will need to use your browser’s "back" button to return to this site after viewing.

I would totally agree with Jennifer..I too attended the conference with my mom and what an experience for the both of us!! Like Jen said, there is sooooo much info swimming in my head i just want to go out there and share it! The doctors that they had there were amazing. Each one of them were very approachable and nice. I liked the fact that I could talk to them one on one(and have and yummy breakfast with them too!) and pick at their brains for a more personal experience. All I can say is that I will definitely continue to attend these conferences on the east coast. I would also encourage everyone who has not yet had the experience of this to PLEASE attend! You will be so glad you did…I know i am!

Thank you ALL so much for your hard work and dedication to having these conferences so we can all stay well informed and educated. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

Although I was unable to attend this year because of two eye surgeries, I will definitely attend next year. Last year was my first time going to the conference, and I absolutely loved it! So glad you were able to go. I look forward to reading some of the presentations.

Were there any discussions of palatal grafts to lower eyelids? I am beginning to think I am the ONLY person who has had this surgery (still recovering.)

@Jennifer M. – Thanks so much for checking in to share your experience! So glad that you were able to make it!

@Shirley – The presenters actually did not discuss the issue of grafts to the lower eyelids. The only year I remember that being discussed was last year…and I can’t recall if this was because you asked the question or if one of the docs brought it up on their own.

For anyone who would like to read a few highlights from the conference, you can follow the Foundation on Twitter at @GDATF or use hashtag #GDBoston.
