Since we are allowed to use scientific and not brand names on here, I looked up propanalol, the generic scientific name of I______, that beta blocker that most of us have been prescribed. Here is what the side effects are, according to the web site I found:
Propranolol ( Symptoms or Effects )
Common: Dizziness / slight drowsiness, male impotence.
Rare: Decreased sexual ability, trouble with sleep, difficulty breathing, cold hands / feet, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, skin rash, swelling ankles / feet / back, joint pain, chest pain, depression, confusion, nausea, fever, or abdominal cramps.
See physician always: Decreased sexual ability, difficulty breathing, cold hands / feet, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, skin rash, swelling ankles / feet, back / joint pain, chest pain, depression, confusion, nausea, fever, or abdominal cramps.
See physician if severe: Dizziness / slight drowsiness or trouble with sleep.
See physician NOW: Fever or depression.
Stop taking and see physician NOW: Difficulty breathing, cold hands / feet, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, skin rash, swelling of ankles / feet, chest pain, or confusion.
If you will note, EVERY single category of side effects mention confusion, which to me is another name for brain fog! Also, Miriam, please note that under “Stop taking and see physician NOW:” is listed the symptom cold hands/feet.
It seems like it’s catch 22–we need the beta blockers to help our heart, but we can’t deal with the side effects! Go figure!
Jake, Jan, and Nancy: when you are lining up speakers for conference, perhaps we could have a pharmacist who could answer a bunch of our quesitons about all these drugs and their side effects and their interaction or lack thereof. Just a thought.
