Jake and the board members have a valid reason for deciding the go with paid members, even though it is unfortuate. We’ve all gotten those false emails or ones that have viruses attact to them.
It is also very easy to join the NGDF, plus there are other benefits to joining. You are able to receive some free bulletins when you join, pay a very low price for others that you are interested in, and you receive a newsletter various times a year that is full of information.
When I first found the bulletin board I quickly joined and have been happy ever since.

I received a response back to one of my e-mails to a person who’s server was blocked. They responded that it seemed like joining was more trouble than it was worth.
Following is my response and I felt it was a good time to share it with the NGDF bulletin board family.
You know, when the bulletin board started we were able to provide all the help everyone needed. Then the Internet became so popular and then attacks started looking for e-mail addresses to send spam to. Then scammers started to sign into web bulletin boards to find people who were looking for alternatives and they flooded them with bogus products.
We have been able to keep the buggers at bay for almost seven years. But they have become so clever at how they do this that almost all medical boards have gone to members only to stop them. We had to follow suit. So the spammers, scammers and hackers have won…
I bet for every twenty e-mails I get relating to Graves’ 19 are bogus. I have to go through each e-mail to find out if they are real or not. I get over 400 e-mails a day. So that I spend 90% of my time looking for valid requests for help or information. The 4 hours a day I volunteer are reduced to 36 minutes of actual help to someone.
So going member only I know almost 100% of my time will be for valid requests for help and information. Sorry you feel it is more trouble than it is worth but when we look at all the time we have to give being stolen by scammers, spammers and hackers, it was the only way to go that we could see to regain the quality time we give our readers and members.
Regards,
Jake.
For those of you who are new, this BB is WORTH anything it takes to get the encourage and support you need – and will continue to need – as you deal with this disease and all of its affects. These facilitators are highly trained and they VOLUNTEER ALL of their efforts for the betterment of us. Please understand their internet dilemna and support them, too. Joy in SoGA
It’s unfortunate that in today’s world, the spammers are creating problems for this message board and others. I wouldn’t want to be going through 400 bogus emails every day. This is a volunteer organization. As a volunteer, no one should have to do that. That would get old awfully fast. If Jake isn’t having to go through 400 bogus emails every day, just think of what he can do for this organization. Jake and Jan are very special people, especially to this organization.
Membership in NGDF is well worth the membership fee. I’m a member of other organizations that charge more. There are benefits to membership such as receiving 6 free bulletins with each year’s membership and the newsletter. Being able to post a question on this board is going to be a huge benefit. If you just want to read other people’s messages, you can do that without being a member. However, if you have questions, it’s worth the price of the membership fee to be able to post your questions.
If you can, please join NGDF and we we will go down this road of Graves’ disease together.
