Hello everyone so I am new to GD and still have a few reamaining questions regarding this horrible disease. I am starting to feel like I am loosing my short term memory. I am not regulated yet on my methimazole but I am wondering if once I do get regulated if this side effect to will pass? It’s starting to make me feel panicked that I am only 25 and can’t remember yet what day it is or sometimes even what or where I’m suppose to be on a certain day. This for me has been a super scary feeling. I also am wondering if feeling like i’m outside my body at certain points during the day almost like i’m depersonalizing is due to the panic? I never felt like this before my GD onset. I mean I had periods of anxiety and stress but never to this point. I have only been on my methimazole for 6 days 10mg once a day and I haven’t seen to much change. I am also taking xanex for the anxiety as needed. So my big questions is will my memory ever come back? And will this horrible feeling of being outside myself like i’m not in real existance go away once my TSH levels and T3,T4 levels are back to being regulated?? Please help! And thanks again for all the support I’ve already received in this forum! I am so appreciative of all of the advice!

Your memory will definitely come back once you are regulated, and stabilized. There are so many chemicals running around in the brain in order to keep us functional, it’s truly staggering. Thyroid hormone is literally the fuel for EVERY cell in the body, so having too much can create all sorts of symptoms. I noticed that when I was hyper, thoughts would come into my head and disappear again before I was even conscious of having a thought. When I was hypo, I couldn’t come up with ideas to save my life. An imbalance of thyroid hormone is damaging for many reasons, and finding your correct level and stabilizing at that level will be a MIRACLE, I promise, but it takes a while. Everything Graves’ takes a while. In the meantime, do everything you can to help yourself remember things, since you know you’re having issues. Write notes, keep a detailed calendar, make lists of what you need to do, everything will help. Do not feel "less than" because you need to use these devices. The day will come when your memory returns. I hope you’re feeling better soon! Try to look for small improvements each day, instead of measuring yourself now against your best self of before. You have been ill, and you are undergoing treatment to get well. You WILL get there. We’ve all come to the other side of that bridge, and you will too. Consider yourself lucky to have an accurate diagnosis and options for treatment. Many other patients are still struggling to find out what they’re even dealing with.
