I received the radiation treatment on January 14th. I just had my first blood test and while my levels are down they are still too high. I am feeling extremely edgey or extremely happy or even flat out depressed. I have an incredible support system at home but this waiting game is making me crazy. Does anyone have any stories about exactly what changes their bodies went thru while the radiation was at work or while they were waiting for their doctor to decide what the next step is? Also is there anyone out there that was able to get pregnant after the six months of waiting for the radiation to leave their body and for their thyroid to become “normal” again ?
LisaAnonymousMarch 1, 1998 at 7:02 pmPost count: 93172Hi Lisa,
I’m Post-RAI since January 9, 1998. My scan was 85% uptake of Iodine.
My Endo gave me a slightly larger RAI dose than needed to combat my thyroid size.
I then saw my Endo three weeks later, had my blood taken for levels and my Endo
immediately started me on Levo-Thyroxine .088mg.I take one daily on an empty stomach,
(for the rest of my life, of course or until a warranted change is necessary).
I began gaining my strenghth back after a 2-3 week period of feeling tired, edgy,
itchy and feeling like crying when happy, sad or indifferent! (smile) But don’t forget,
everyone is different with their uptake, signs and symptoms Post-RAI.
As far as the pregnancy issue,my husband and I are focusing on other things we would
like to do before kids come into the plan. This takes my mind off of the maternal
instincts we must endure for the six month to one year stint. If your symptoms are
driving you really crazy, call your Endo and make an appointment, take notes of time
and lenghth of days of what you are experiencing at this time. This timing
could very well be the baseline for your present blood levels & medication versus
future medication dosages and blood levels.
Good Luck,

My feet and face are slightly swollen(have had swolen fingers and eyelids all the while with Graves), I am soooo tired, gaining weight, and sore sore joints and legs.
Any info will be greatfully accepted. Wishing everyone well.

AnonymousApril 21, 1998 at 8:39 pmPost count: 93172Hi Joan Marie
I also had what is commonly refered to as “brain fog.” It was
just a general slowing down of thought processes. My periods
became longer and more painful. In addition to the other pain
my Carpal tunnel syndrome flairs up. These are my biggies,
hope they help…..CarolynAnonymousApril 21, 1998 at 8:49 pmPost count: 93172Hi all, I had RAI 6 weeks ago and think I may be going Hypothyroid! Please tell me any symptons you had if you went hypo. AnonymousApril 21, 1998 at 11:37 pmPost count: 93172Those are all hypothyroid symptoms. This site has a lot of information on hypothyroidism and how to cope.

For me, hypo was much worse than hyper. Get your Doctor to start you on a replacement as soon as possible.AnonymousApril 22, 1998 at 12:19 amPost count: 93172It’s very possible that these are signs of being hypo, so it is really important that you get yourself off to your doctor for some bloodwork, even if he/she hasn’t scheduled you for it yet. Catching it sooner is much better than later. And start watching what you are eating, right now. If you are hypo — or going into it — your body needs a lot less fuel than you are used to giving it. If you eat carefully during all of this, you’ll save yourself some diet headaches later on. Don’t skip meals, because current information says your body will save up on fats in response. But make your meals smaller ones.
Wishing you good lluck, and good health.

AnonymousMay 22, 2000 at 10:44 amPost count: 93172I am now 6 weeks post RAI and feel as though I may be going hypo since I am in bed at 8:30 and am not having those heart pounding sessions when I lay down. Are there any signs or symptoms I should be watching for? I know I need to watch my food intake but was also wondering, since I have virtually no metabolism right now, what also about my immune system? Will I catch everything that comes along. I know I was told that when I was on PTU that it made me more susceptible to certain kinds of illnesses since my immune system would be very low. What can someone tell me about hypothyroidism? I do not see my doctor again until July 6. Thank you!
